Winslow Homer, Two Guides, 1877

01:35
Two Guides 1877 Oil on canvas 24 1/4 x 38 1/4 in. (61.6 x 97.2 cm) 1955.3 Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Two outdoorsmen stand in autumnal bracken. Both men are identifiable: the elder is Orson Phelps, the younger Monroe Holt, two well-known woodsmen and guides in the region of Keene Valley, New York. The outline of Beaver Mountain in the Adirondacks shelters their forms. A comparable specificity applies to the atmosphere, with trailing clouds lending a cool edge to the warm day. The pairing of older and younger man, along with their shared focus, encourages reading this as a scene of education, of Phelps passing on knowledge to an already self-reliant Holt. A comparable generosity and bounty seem to apply to the relation of the men to nature: they stand in an established clearing, axes in hand, yet the summer's growth is around them, and one sapling lifts its form above the profile of the distant mountain. Homer's emphasis on complementary color pairs (orange/blue of foliage and sky; red/green of Holt's fireman's shirt and much of the landscape) points to his interest in the questions of technique and perception that animated his advanced French contemporaries, as does his dashing, skipping brushwork. One critic of 1878 felt this: "his paintings have acquired such freedom as almost to warrant them in being called 'impressionist' pictures." Homer's composition, formed by diagonals of brightness and contour, focuses attention on Phelps's pointing hand. This in turn raises the question of what the men are seeing in the fictive space ahead of them. And this converts the expected sense of a picture as a view toward the landscape into one that forces contemplation of the unseen and consideration of the act of looking itself. The painting's first owner was Thomas B. Clarke, one of the most prominent collectors and advocates for American art in the late nineteenth century and one of Homer's most significant patrons. —Marc Simpson, curator of Winslow Homer: Making Art, Making History

Electric Paris - Electricity at the Turn of the Century

12:14
This video accompanies the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute's current exhibition, Electric Paris, providing a look at Paris in the late 19th and early 20th century as gas and electric lighting began to illuminate the city. The transformative effect of these technological advances is reflected in art from the era and helped to redefine Paris as the "City of Light." The early moving pictures in this video were taken by Thomas A. Edison and Edwin Porter, and they give us glimpses into how electricity was harnessed for entertainment and energy as it became more widely available for public use. The exhibition is on view February 17--April 21, 2013.

Winslow Homer, Eastern Point, 1900

01:35
Eastern Point 1900 Oil on canvas 30 1/4 x 48 1/2 in. (76.8 x 123.2 cm) 1955.6 Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Homer painted three great seascapes in the fall of 1900: On a Lee Shore (Rhode Island School of Design), West Point, Prout's Neck (Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute), and Eastern Point. He conceived of the latter two as companions, writing that as a pair they would "make an impression." He finished Eastern Point first, signing and dating it on October 14—a specificity as to day rare in landscape paintings of this scale and era. The two pictures together not only make an impression but culminate a decade in which Homer devoted himself to painting the Maine seacoast, and bracket, geographically, the half-mile-long cliff line of Prout's Neck that was his focus. When the two were seen together in New York in 1901, they prompted some critics to praise his truthfulness: "He shows us the elemental beauty of the sea, and shows it with undiluted realistic force." Most writers then and throughout the first half of the century preferred Eastern Point to the more showy West Point, Prout's Neck. Eastern Point has a relatively complex history of ownership. Lyman G. Bloomingdale, founder of the New York department store, bought the work in 1903. Clark acquired it two decades later, in 1923. But he sold it; by 1929 it was in the collection of the Addison Gallery of American Art. Only in 1954, after it was deaccessioned by the Addison, and after he had both acquired West Point, Prout's Neck and determined to share his collection with the public through founding the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, did he buy it back, reuniting the great pair of Homer's late seascapes. —Marc Simpson, curator of Winslow Homer: Making Art, Making History
