Dragons at the Great Kew Pagoda - Part 1

Have a peek into the development of this unique project to bring dragons back to Kew. In 2015 Historic Royal Palaces embarked on an exciting conservation project aiming to return the Kew Pagoda to its former splendour. Remarkably none of the 80 dazzling dragons which once adorned the building survived. We are now undertaking the task of recreating the dragons following curatorial research, referencing contemporary archive documents and chinoiserie style sources. In this short clip we look at the beginnings of this journey; finding the shape for the new Pagoda dragons.

Sarabande in D minor from Handel’s only opera, Xerxes, played on the chamber organ at Kew Palace. The chamber organ is located in the dining room, where George III and Queen Charlotte spent many summers. The couple were avid admirers of Handel. When George III was suffering from illness in later life, he found it comforting to play music here.

Some of the greatest minds and most brilliant performers came to Kensington Palace in the 17th and 18th centuries to show off their work and seek the patronage of princesses living there. From the amazing discoveries of Isaac Newton to the latest hits from Mozart, Kensington was the place to be! This exclusive family event at Kensington Palace played host to English National Ballet as they performed a version of Sleeping Beauty from their My First Ballet series. The Science Museum also performed a “greatest hits” of their awe-inspiring shows and there were plenty of laughs thrown in along the way.
