33 Artists in 3 Acts: Sarah Thornton with Andrea Fraser, Massimiliano Gioni, and Laurie Simmons

01:33:23
Who do artists think they are? How do they command belief in their work? What myths do they enliven and reject? In the summer of 2009, Sarah Thornton began investigating these questions, which eventually became the driving force of her new book, 33 Artists in 3 Acts (WW Norton, 2014). At once ambitious and entertaining, its nonfiction narratives go behind the scenes with a superb cast of living artists—from global superstars to unheralded teachers—to humanize and demystify contemporary art. Massimiliano Gioni, Artistic Director of the New Museum, is one of three curators featured in its pages because he has presented himself as Maurizio Cattelan—one of the book’s nine recurring artists. During this session, Thornton and Gioni, along with artists Andrea Fraser and Laurie Simmons will discuss the characters, plot, and themes of 33 Artists in 3 Acts. http://www.newmuseum.org/calendar/view/33-artists-in-3-acts-sarah-thornton-with-carroll-dunham-andrea-fraser-and-massimiliano-gioni

Whose Terms? New Perspectives on Social Practice -- Session 1

01:22:04
The symposium is structured around a running list of terms that either have been or might be aligned with social practice art. Of the roughly fifty terms, nine will be taken up at the symposium by invited speakers who include artists, art historians, theorists, and curators. Addressing individual artworks, theoretical arguments, historical precedents, or manifestations of the terms in interdisciplinary contexts, speakers will speculatively complicate and even challenge given terms of social engagement in art, while positing and testing new criteria. 8:42 Julia Robinson on MATERIAL 34:46 Marc Herbst on CRITICALITY 54:44 Christoph Cox on ETHICS 1:08:12 Sally Szwed on EMPATHY http://www.newmuseum.org/calendar/view/whose-terms-new-perspectives-on-social-practice

Sky Room Concert with Jeff Kolar and Jennifer Monson, October 24, 2013 (Video Documentation)

52:04
Sky Room Concert with Jeff Kolar and Jennifer Monson was programmed in conjunction with “Performance Archiving Performance,” a presentation of works that engage archive as medium, on view in the Fifth Floor Resource Center from November 6, 2013–January 12, 2014. Travis Chamberlain, Associate Curator of Performance and Manager of Public Programs, on the video documentation of Sky Room Concert with Jeff Kolar and Jennifer Monson: "Perhaps the video has some value as an anti-document, a record of loss, a testament to presence over representation. For me, it provides a clear example of the limitations of video documentation, and, for that reason, I find it to be an especially prescient and valuable record with regard to its production within “Performance Archiving Performance” and the questions about documentation of performance that were, in part, the subject of that project." About the Concert Accompanying an improvised performance by Jennifer Monson, composer Jeff Kolar provides a sound design that responds to the delicate and sophisticated atmospheres and shifting spatial parameters of bodies in relationship to one another on-site in the New Museum’s Sky Room. The soundscape for the performance is generated live through field experiments in AM/FM, shortwave, citizens’ band, and unlicensed radio spectrums. The instrument arrangement of hand-built radio transmitters and receivers responds directly to external weather phenomena, wireless technology systems, and human activity. The body of the dancer and the shifting bodies of the audience, in concert with constant shifts in environmental conditions inside and outside of the New Museum, generate interference that provides the raw material for an improvised composition.

New Museum Block Party 2014

01:11
Join the New Museum for our annual Block Party in Sara D. Roosevelt Park on Saturday, July 19! Enjoy a day of interactive projects and performances inspired by current exhibitions and New Museum programs. newmuseum.org/calendar/view/new-museum-block-party-2 The day's performances offer up an afternoon of music showcasing artists who use their voices to traverse and recombine diverse musical traditions in dynamic new ways. 1 PM Akim Funk Buddha blends rhyming, mouth and body percussion, storytelling, Mongolian throat-singing, and Indonesian monkey chants with a physicality that references breakdancing, martial arts, tap, and circus arts. 2 PM Joy Askew's melodic piano-based tunes showcase her talents as a versatile singer-songwriter (and dedicated animal rights activist) and are marked by a distinct vocal style that gently shifts between ethereal high notes and a more stripped-down bluesy sincerity. 3 PM M. Lamar's harrowing sound—combining operatic vocals with lush piano accompaniment—draws heavily on Negro spiritual traditions, Western classical music, and dissonant black metal. 4 PM Lumberob is a kinetically explosive beat-boxer who makes tongue-twisted arcade music for the mind and body.
