COLOMBIA, The Warmth Of A Smile

52:06
Our tour starts in the capital, Bogotá, before heading southward across the Andes as far as Popayàn. We then head back north to the coastline of the Caribbean Sea. Our journey takes us through some fabulous landscapes while stopping off to discover cities such as Cali, Medellin and Cartagena. Not forgetting the rural regions and encounters with Amerindians, plus some prestigious archaeological sites like the Ciudad Perdida (lost city). Our journey is by road, not by plane despite the long distances involved. This way we get a closer look at the daily life of local inhabitants and take in the wide variety of natural landscapes. Colombia is a vast country sandwiched between South and Central America. Notorious for its social and economic problems (poverty, drug-trafficking and armed militia forces), Colombia is actually a little-known country in that the majority of received images more often than not filter through news media reporting. What do we know about the country aside form the themes that make headline news in newspapers? Colombia happens to be a very rich country in terms of both landscapes and culture.

The foreign legion : men without a past (full documentary)

01:11:03
Jean-Baptiste Gallot followed these elite soldiers who have come from all over the world to serve France. For Droit de Savoir” he filmed these Foreign Legion new recruits during the different stages of training in Djibouti, in Guyana and also during the violent operations in the Ivory Coast. From a series of warning shots at a column of vehicles led by the Ivory Coast president’s rebels in power to the training sessions in the Guianese equatorial forest or in the Djibouti desert, the most dangerous and hazardous missions are the ones given to these “men without pasts.” Eighty percent of these trainees successfully complete the training compared to only 50 percent among soldiers of the regular army. Considered as one of the best professional troops of the French army, the Foreign Legion is conceived to deal with the high risk missions where the probability of losing soldiers is highest. This is also the only army unit where men have the right to a second chance no matter what their past. An exceptional document which testifies to the reality of ground combat, and where the adversity and danger lived through together create a durable cohesion.”

LAS VEGAS, The Mirage Out West

52:07
In Las Vegas, the sky’s the limit. A century ago the city did not even exist. Today, in the middle of the Mojave Desert, between the Grand Canyon and Death Valley, there lies the world’s largest entertainments park. Pierre Brouwers shows us the extent to which this is a city of excess, both out of time and out of the ordinary. Fabulous. But what lies behind this ocean of dollars, these little white chapels where Elvis look-alikes wed couples one after the other, these world-beating giant hotel-casinos? Over and above the whirl of Sin City, Pierre Brouwers gives us a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes… in a film that beggars the question: mirage or reality?

Five times bigger than France, third largest country in Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is, foremost, one of the world’s richest countries in raw materials. There’s cobalt, mainly used in mobile phones and the aeronautics industry, copper, zinc, gold and diamonds in astounding quantities. Our cameras focused on Katanga, a province in the south of the DRC, which has three quarters of the country’s wealth. We accompany Eugene, owner of a truck, laden to the top with goods, that must travel from Lubumbashi, the country’s economic capital, to his native city of Bukama, 400 miles to the north. The journey from Lubumbashi to Bukama takes four days. At the wheel is « the prince of the highway », answering to the name of Domingo, aided by three escorts: Elephant, Bijou and Maroquin. They cling onto the outside of the truck and are the driver’s eyes and ears throughout the journey. We accompanied them for the whole of the trip, a nightmare along almost totally unusable roads, an African remake of the « Wages of Fear » set against a background of organized looting of the country’s wealth by three principal countries: China, India and the USA.

The Golden Retriever - Pet Dog Documentary English

43:26
The Golden Retriever is a large-sized breed of dog bred as gun dogs to retrieve shot waterfowl such as ducks and upland game birds during hunting and shooting parties, and were named 'retriever' because of their ability to retrieve shot game undamaged. Golden Retrievers have an instinctive love of water, and are easy to train to basic or advanced obedience standards. They are a long-coated breed, with a dense inner coat that provides them with adequate warmth in the outdoors, and an outer coat that lies flat against their bodies and repels water. Golden Retrievers are well suited to residency in suburban or country environments. Although they need substantial outdoor exercise, they should be housed in a fenced area because of their instinctual tendency to roam. They shed copiously, particularly at the change of seasons, and require fairly regular grooming.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo, a country four times the size of France. If you want to travel from the capital, Kinshasa, to Kisangani, the third largest city, there is no road. This leaves only plane or boat. A journey of 1,750 kilometres along the Congo, the biggest river in Africa, but more importantly, one of the most dangerous in the world! The Gbermani provides a regular link between the two cities. Like all the other boats on the river, this one is special; it travels in convoy, pushing barges filled with goods and passengers. It’s not very big but it is fitted with two ultra powerful engines that allow it to push two barges and two whaleboats. It is a veritable floating city. A convoy of 1500 people, left to their own devices, without water, electricity, restaurants, medication or pharmacy. Along the river the buoys and navigation signs have long disappeared. The boat must sail by eye, trusting to an old chart dating back to the Belgian colonisation and the instinct and experience of the captain. And many dangers lie in wait for this boat. There are the water hyacinths, threatening to jam the propeller blades at any moment, mechanical failure—frequent on these old tubs—or sandbanks where the boat may run aground, etc. Aboard the barges, one passenger—a trained nurse—attempts to treat the children and, in particular, a man who has cut open his foot in an accident. She has little in the way of medication and no anaesthetics. Assisted by other passengers, she operates on the man fully conscious in an attempt to save his foot. On the other side of the coin there are some happy events, such as the birth of a child, named Gbermani, after the boat. A two-week long journey that stretches out to more than a month on the river of peril.

Siberia: the Deadly Thaw (full documentary)

51:31
Every year the icy mists of Lake Baikal are the starting point for a testing journey for the men of the village of Kholodnaya on the northern shore of the lake. They must leave to carry supplies to the Evenks, reindeer herdsmen who live in isolation on the high plateaux of Siberia. For six months the herders have received no supplies. The winter has been too harsh for the supply trucks. Only Dmitri and a handful of men are prepared to take the risks in supplying these herders. They only have to travel 65 kilometers… and yet it takes them 48 hours! The spring has turned the road into a swamp. A veritable race against the clock is under way. Ruts, swollen rivers and forests: the six-wheel drive trucks will have a tough job taking on the natural elements. Sometimes there’s no other choice but to use the truck as a makeshift bulldozer to smash down the trees that block the road. When night falls with its icy temperatures, the mechanical parts are blocked with ice. And when nature forces the men to get out of the trucks another danger lurks… wolves. Further down in the valley, the thaw has transformed the Baikal into a deadly trap for those who live from it. In a very short time nothing will remain of the thick sheet of ice that has covered the lake the whole winter. Many fishermen have lost their lives on it, falling into water at 20. Because to find fish, they have to travel several kilometers across the surface of the lake, which is as big as Belgium. Anatoly, a fisherman, has just lost his best friend, whose car sank to the bottom of the lake in just seconds. Despite the danger, Anatoly has no choice but to chance the fragile melting ice. His 200 € monthly pension isn’t enough to feed himself properly. And when the lake becomes completely impracticable, they have to turn to an even more dangerous form of hunting: that of the great Siberian bear, the Grizzly.

The Doberman Pinscher, or Dobermann, or Doberman, is a medium-large breed of domestic dog originally developed around 1890 by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, a tax collector from Germany. The muzzle is long, and so affords the leverage for an extremely strong bite. The Doberman stands on its toes (not the pads) and is not usually heavy-footed. Ideally, they have an even and graceful gait. Traditionally, the ears are cropped and posted, and the tail is docked. However, in some countries it is illegal to do so. Except in the albino, in which it is extremely difficult to see, each purebred Doberman has markings on the chest, paws/legs, muzzle, above the eyes, and underneath the tail. Nature: It has an active intelligence, dynamic, wich only waits to express itself in action, raring to demonstrate in work, exercise or at play or in any other activity. Particularity: The Dobermann is named after its developer, a German tax collector called Louis Dobermann. A skilled dog breeder, he set out, between 1865 and 1870 to create a large, alert and aggressive terrier to protect him while he made his rounds.

The mysteries of the nefertiti bust (full documentary)

58:13
It has all the aspects of a real police investigation: methods, scenario, and form. This new encounter takes you into the mysteries of Nefertiti. Since its discovery in 1912, the beauty of the bust of Nefertiti has entered into legend and is still raising questions. Who is Nefertiti? Where does she come from? What’s her history? What were the circumstances of the discovery of her bust? Why has it been the object of so much desire since 1912? Is it a copy? What do science and the experts tell us? “It’s useless to describe it… you have to see it!” wrote Ludwig Borchardt, the German Egyptologist who discovered the bust of Nefertiti in Tell el Amarna in 1912. Since then, Nefertiti’s beauty has become legendary and raises a thousand questions. At 50 cm high and cut off vertically at the shoulders, the work is a rarity, “a miracle of equilibrium”. A century after its discovery, the bust is at the centre of several polemic debates. After years of research, Henri Stierin, a Swiss historian, puts forward the scandalous theory that the bust of Nefertiti is no more than an experimental copy! On the other hand, Zahi Hawass, Superintendant of Egyptian Antiquities is claiming its return and accuses Germany of the illegal export of a masterpiece. So, must Germany return this world-renowned bust? In the course of this archaeological investigation, Jamy and his guests try to answer the many questions that surround the bust of Nefertiti…

Los Misterios Mayas, Documental en Español

37:58

Animals Like Us : Animal Medicine - Wildlife Documentary

51:43
Like us, animals are exposed to parasites, bacteria and viruses – the germs which cause disease. How do they survive these attacks ? Recent research and observation have shown that animals use plant and insect substances to treat themselves – not only do they apply things to their skin, they actually treat themselves by feeding on things not normally part of their diets. Capuchin monkeys rub citrus fruit on their fur, caterpillars eat poison hemlock, herbivorous red deer have even been seen chewing the legs off live seabirds. This film takes off around the world to discover how animals use medicine, it questions what notions they have about health and how medical knowledge is passed on from one generation to the next. In doing so, the film also asks what we can learn from animals about medicine. Animals Like Us : Animal Adoption - Wildlife Documentary

51:39
Altruism, an act that bestows a benefit on the recipient while conferring a cost to the actor, is one of the central paradoxes of evolution. In the wild, where only the fittest survive, adopting other animals’ offspring is not really in line with Darwin’s theory of evolution. And yet, amongst bees, dolphins, lions and several primate species, altruism may go as far as adoption. In the case of social insects, parent substitution was a flaw in Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection: the biologist noticed that non-reproductive insects who adopted and helped young ones, brought a large portion of genetic baggage from their parents. Darwin had to broaden his theory to the family group. For mammals, including men, what advantage is there in the act of adoption? In the years following the adoption, does the adopted individual contribute to the foster parents’ survival and vice versa? The controversy at the heart of this documentary continues to be debated in today’s scientific world. While raising these different questions, this documentary will study each case separately because each adoption behaviour has evolved independently forming its own pattern, its own benefit and even… its own disadvantages. documentary made by Jacqueline Farmer

Philippines: when the mountain rumbles (full documentary)

01:21:14
It was not so long ago that on the island of Luzon in the Philippines, certain tribes would confront each other in bloody battle. The victor would carry home the head of his enemy as a trophy to render him homage. These wars were waged far from civilization, high up in the cordillera that conceals hundreds of villages. To put an end to such conflicts and impose the authority of the state, the Philippine Government decided to build a road between Bontoc and Tabuk, the two major cities of the north. A titanic work of construction began more than one hundred years ago and yet, today, the road seems no more than a track. It is called the Road of the Kalingas, the Road of the Head Hunters. Every day, Christopher, the site manager tries to use his diggers to open the road and every night the mountain recovers a section of it. Thousands of cubic metres of earth and rock that carry everything in their passage. The next day, if the machines have not been buried by the landslides, everything must be started again. The Kalingas is actually an important economic axis. Bus drivers take every sort of risk to get their passengers to their destination. It takes nearly a day, if all goes well, to cover the 90 kilometres. There is no public service; all the buses are private. Ed is the owner and driver of a bus that is more than twenty years old and which sways dangerously. Were it not for the driver’s skill, the bus could plunge into a ravine at any moment, as too often happens. Fernando clears the road. He removes every rock that blocks their path. But, above all, to avoid being swept away by a landslide, he scans the mountain. At the least rock, the least sign of a slide, Fernando stops the bus. Certain, very isolated villages, are inaccessible. Then you must either walk for long hours or take a motorbike taxi to reach your destination. Watari and his daredevil bikers fear nothing. Without helmets and wearing only sandals they carry their passengers and their goods. This impossible road is also the one taken by thousands to meet Santino. This man is said to have the gift of making the lame walk and curing the seriously sick. According to him, he can even raise the dead thanks to a miracle water. This bus also carries adventurers dreaming of riches. At the very top of the mountains there are gold mines...
