Ann Veronica Janssens

04:40
Ann Veronica Janssens discusses her installations at Carriageworks and Cockatoo Island for the 18th Biennale of Sydney. "I am interested in what escapes me -- not in order to arrest it but in order to experiment with the 'ungraspable'. Engaged gestures, the loss of control that is fully assumed and proposed as an active experience, my way of proceeding consist of such loss of control, the absence of overbearing materiality, the attempt to escape from the tyranny of objects." Robin Peckham: Tracing the Post-Internet

01:03:37
4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art / Curators' Intensive Public Talk http://dasplatforms.com/videos/robin-peckham-tracing-the-post-internet/ Robin Peckham / Tracing the Post-Internet: A Case Study in Curatorial Process Thursday 10 July, 2014 What are the relationships between the movement that has come to be called ‘post-internet’ and the media realities of the historical moment that enables it? This talk will present the curatorial process and research behind the exhibition Art Post-Internet co-curated by Peckham, paying close attention to the differences between survey methodologies and thematic approaches. Peckham will respond to notions including the differences between intent and effect in artistic practice, the tension between documentation and materiality in recent art, collaboration as a tool, the specificities of the exhibition and other possible realisations, and categories of curatorial work from essayistic narrative compositions to forms of analysis. This presentation will tentatively structure a logic by which we might be able to expand a thematic understanding of post-internet art based on an empirical understanding of its social core. Isaac Julien: PLAYTIME

12:42
British artist Isaac Julien discusses his new film installation PLAYTIME. "Presented in three parts, PLAYTIME is set across three cities defined by their relationship to capital: London, a city transformed by the deregulation of banks; Reykjavik, where the 2008 crisis began; and Dubai, one of the Middle East's burgeoning financial markets. The narrative follows six characters: the Artist, the Hedge Fund Manager, the Auctioneer, the House Worker, the Art Dealer, and the Reporter, exploring how each is affected by capital and the global financial crisis. The characters are based on real individuals whom Julien interviewed and researched extensively. PLAYTIME features performances from highly acclaimed actors, including James Franco, Maggie Cheung, Mercedes Cabral, Colin Salmon and Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson, along with world-famous auctioneer Simon de Pury, as himself." Peter Robinson: Gravitas Lite

05:16
Peter Robinson discusses, 'Gravitas Lite' his monumental, Styrofoam installation on Cockatoo Island for the 18th Biennale of Sydney. "For some time now, I've been working through a love-hate relationship with minimalism and various forms of its mannerist and populist legacies. I love its po-faced assertions of egalitarian values -- it's weird hovering between a steel-fronted refusal of politicised content, and an oblique pitch for radical political valence. I find the fierce attention to conditions of material existence and perceptual behaviours -- which much minimalist practice tried unsuccessfully to fix through formal rigour -- freshly relevant in our so-called digital age." Dani Marti ARMOUR, 2012--13 rope, rubber and leather, dimenstions variable. © Dani Marti. Courtesy BREENSPACE, Sydney; ARC ONE Gallery, Melbourne and Greenaway Art Gallery, Adelaide. Dani Marti's Armour is a series of suspended sculptures woven in synthetic rope, leather and industrial rubber. The artist's viewing of Samurai armour at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York provoked the creation of this series. Marti, who trained in Catalan tapestry techniques, has employed the same knot used in the body-wrapping forms of a Samurai's garments to create his own shadow warriors. A selection of etchings from Goya's Los Caprichos, drawn from the Gallery's collection, have been included in Marti's Adelaide Biennial installation, staging a conversation between two artists of Spanish descent across more than 200 years of human history. On Return and What Remains: Mark Feary

14:01
On Return and What Remains Khadim Ali, Bonita Ely, Harun Farocki, Omer Fast, Richard Mosse, Baden Pailthorpe 21 August - 12 October 2014 Curated by Mark Feary On Return and What Remains brings into focus the personal tolls endured by returning soldiers, their families and loved ones, as well as those impacted by the ravages of war. The exhibition assembles a selection of insightful, harrowing and confronting works that attempt to shine light on the enormous challenges and difficulties endured by those who have served duty on the frontlines of global conflicts. Coinciding with the current withdrawal of Australian and allied forces from Afghanistan, as well as marking the centenary of the beginning of the First World War, the position of this project evades contention around the legitimacy of particular wars and debates regarding international intervention in them. Instead, On Return and What Remains focuses on narratives lensed through the individual, the sacrifices made and predicaments faced as military personnel return home and attempt to integrate back into civilian life, a life rendered unfamiliar and potentially hostile to them. Although largely focused on the perspective of individual troops, the project also envelops those whose lives are irrevocably altered by such conflicts from a range of perspectives, from those who have been forced to flee their homeland to the families and loved ones who attempt to support emotionally, physically and psychologically damaged returnees. On Return and What Remains focuses not on the atrocities of war but what emerges in its aftermath from the perspective of those implicated from afar. The exhibition will be presented across all of the galleries that Artspace occupies within The Gunnery, a building that was commandeered by the Australian Navy during the Second World War, and a site that continues to bear witness to the active navy presence located opposite.
