Andrew Keen: "How to Fix the Future" | Talks at Google

49:44
Andrew Keen was among the earliest to write about the dangers of the Internet to our culture and society and he joins us to discuss his new book, How to Fix the Future. After the huge changes of the Industrial Revolution, civilised societies remade 19th century capitalism into a more humane version of itself - and Andrew shows how we can do the same in the wake of the Digital Revolution. He identifies five broad strategies to tackle the digital future and travels the world to find best (and worst!) practices in each area. In doing he so, he aims to provide hope that the economic inequality, unemployment, cultural decay, war on privacy and individual alienation caused by the digital upheaval may still be solvable so that we can look forward to the future. Donald Glover Drops Hilarious 'Deadpool' Script After FX Pulls Plug on Series

On Saturday, FX announced it would no longer be teaming up with Donald Glover to release an animated ‘Deadpool’ TV series. The network cited “creative differences” as the reason for it, but some media outlets speculated that Glover’s busy schedule may have been to blame for the decision. Glover finally spoke on the split on Wednesday morning by taking to Twitter to reveal that he “wasn’t too busy” to work on ‘Deadpool.’ He shared a hilarious script of the show’s season finale as proof he was more than ready to take on the role. Elephant bird egg discovered in museum

03:07
Elephant bird egg discovered in museum Rare specimen belonging to giant extinct species – which was previously thought to be fake – found in cabinet by curators cataloguing collection One of the largest eggs ever known has been discovered hidden in the back of an American museum. While cataloguing their collection, curators at the Buffalo Museum of Science in New York stumbled across a gigantic egg hidden in a cabinet. Weighing 1.4kg and with a length of around 30cm, the piece was labelled as a replica of an elephant bird egg – but a reappraisal has revealed it is in fact the genuine specimen. As their name suggests, elephant birds were enormous, with the largest individuals reaching three metres in height and weighing up to 500kg. Related to other modern flightless birds like ostriches and emus, the elephant bird lived on the island of Madagascar until it became extinct around the 17th century. Their eggs had a volume equivalent to around 150 chicken eggs, and were the largest ever recorded. It is generally thought that humans drove the birds to extinction through a combination of hunting and egg theft. When Paige Langle, the museum’s collections manager of zoology, laid eyes on the “model” egg, she immediately felt it “too realistic”. “I tried to shrug it off, but the more closely I looked at the surface of the eggshell and felt the weight of the egg, the more I kept thinking this has to be real,” she told Smithsonian.com. After searching through the rest of the collection, Ms Langle’s suspicion was confirmed when she found the actual replica egg, along with records indicating the museum had indeed purchased a real elephant bird egg in 1939. Staff also found a letter written by the museum’s old curator, indicating he wanted to acquire just such an egg. To make absolutely sure, the curators sent their egg to scientists at the State University College at Buffalo. They radiographed the specimen and confirmed that not only was it authentic, it had actually been fertilised and contained fragments that could be all that was left of a developing chick. The discovery is notable as fewer than 40 elephant bird eggs exist in public institutions around the world. Having established the egg’s true nature, the museum curators intend to put it on display for the first time since the 1950s. In a 2011 documentary, Sir David Attenborough visited Madagascar to learn about the elephant birds – a species that had fascinated him since he was presented with some massive shards of egg when he visited the island in 1960. The veteran natural history presenter explained the role that humans had in the birds’ downfall, and warned that many animals today are likely to meet the same fate. Other giant flightless birds such as the moa of New Zealand are also known to have been driven to extinction as a result of human activity. Research by Dr Kristina Guild Douglass while she was a graduate student at Yale University suggested that besides elephant bird egg-poaching by humans, a changing climate on Madagascar also likely played a role in the decline of the species.
Drawing is back in fashion as British Museum offer pencils and paper for new blockbuster exhibition

08:53
It was once the staple of every artist’s practice, before falling out of fashion at the hands of conceptual art, formaldehyde cows and unmade beds. But drawing is officially back, according to the British Museum, as it plans to offer pencils and sketchbooks at a major exhibition for the first time. Staff at the museum said they had noticed a significant increase in art students and members of the public wanting to draw in its galleries, despite the proliferation of mobile phone cameras. As such, they are to provide pencils, paper, rubbers and smudging clothes at its new blockbuster Rodin exhibition, inspired by the artist’s own visits to draw in its galleries in the late 19th century. Curators hope to encourage the visiting public to look more closely at its objects, swapping a quick photograph, often uploaded onto social media, with the time it takes to sketch by hand. In 2016, the V&A found itself facing criticism after banning drawing at a major temporary exhibition due to “loan restrictions”. The British Museum will now ensure its examination of Rodin and the art of Ancient Greece sees objects given more space, allowing visitors to stand around them for longer to draw without impeding on others. It has previously taken steps to revive the art form, sending its most important drawings on a tour in 2016, after learning modern art students are “more likely to have a blog than a sketchbook”. Sarah Jaffray, who has been running a drawing project at the museum, said there had been a “huge surge” in art students wanting to study sketching, as a new generation rebelled against the last. In years gone by, she suggested, the skill of drawing had fallen out of fashion and considered secondary to “concept”, so famously associated with Marcel Duchamp  and his urinal “Fountain” and celebrated by the Young British Artists. Even curators are now getting in on the revival, with after-hours drawing classes for themselves. The Rodin drawing project was created by Melany Rose and Rebecca Penrose, who were in turn inspired by stories of the artist himself crediting sketching as the key to his sculpture. Rodin is known to have visited the museum in 1881, with evidences of his sketches on notepaper taken from the nearby Thackeray Hotel where he stayed. An activity pack, designed especially for families and provided free for visitors, includes a sketchbook, pencil, stencils, smudging cloth, rubber, activity sheet and artistic beret for inspiration. Ms Penrose said the exhibition was designed with more space around the objects than usual, with the Parthenon sculptures placed on lower plinths to allow visitors to see their detail more clearly. Large windows will be left uncovered to allow the sculptures to be viewed in natural daylight, making it “an ideal exhibition for sketching”. “We hope that people who want to draw in the exhibition will feel empowered, especially as Rodin was himself so passionate about drawing,” she said. 50 Cent Now Claims He Made Absolutely No Money From Bitcoin

Woman Files Lawsuit After DNA Test Allegedly Says Her Biological Dad Was Fertility Doctor

01:27
Ancestry.com is out here changing people’s lives—but it’s not always for the better. According to the Washington Post, one woman who took the website’s DNA test discovered her biological father was not the man who had raised her; he was actually a now-retired fertility doctor who allegedly used his own sperm to impregnate her mother 36 years ago. After Kelli Rowlette received the shocking news, she and her family filed a lawsuit against Dr. Gerald E. Mortimer for medical negligence, fraud, battery, negligent infliction of emotional distress, and breach of contract. According to the suit, Rowlette was not aware that her now-divorced parents had undergone artificial insemination after unsuccessful attempts at natural conception. Mortimer reportedly told the couple that the issue was caused by the husband’s low sperm count and the wife’s tipped uterus; so, he suggested that the wife be inseminated with a mix of the husband’s sperm and that of an anonymous donor to increase the changes of conception. According to Just Jared, the newest theory surrounding Kylie comes from Wikipedia: fans think Kylie will be announcing her pregnancy soon on Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Steph Curry Remembers Meeting 'Assh*le' NBA Players As a Kid

Steph Curry is one of the most popular players in the NBA, especially among the younger crowd, so he spends a lot of his time both before and after games catering to the kids who love him. He routinely signs autographs for as many as 100 kids after his pregame workouts, and he’s also known for carving out time for sick kids who make wishes to meet with the Warriors star. It’s why it was so surprising when a video of Curry seemingly ignoring a kid after a game against the Nets back in November went viral. The young boy’s mom posted the clip on Facebook the next day and suggested Curry ignored her son on purpose. Raven-Symoné Is Getting Dragged After Shading Diddy, Jay Z, and T.I on Instagram

01:47
Raven-Symoné faced serious heat because of an Instagram post addressing many iconic men in hip-hop. The television star reposted a photo including T.I., Jay Z, Diddy, and others gathering at the Roc Nation pre-Grammy brunch. The original post featured a caption that snidely criticized the men's success: "A group of so-called 'successful' Black men (minus Khalid [sic] racially) who became rich and famous from perpetuating the worst Black stereotypes to the ears and eyes of the whole planet like drug dealing, pimping, murdering other Black men and disrespecting Black women. I know, making observations is being a hater. Cheers." Raven added a set of emojis—the monocle, the mouthless face, and a yellow heart—that suggested she agreed with the sentiment. Patriots Are Being Accused of Cheating Before the Super Bowl

01:46
Are you still trying to decide which team to root for in Super Bowl LII on Sunday night? Maybe this will help. The latest Super Bowl will actually be a rematch of Super Bowl XXXIX, which took place in Jacksonville back in 2005 and pitted the Patriots up against the Eagles. That game ended with the Patriots winning 24-21 and securing the third Super Bowl win for Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. But according to a former Eagles coach, New England may have been victorious, in part, because of some signal-stealing on the part of the Patriots. Former Eagles linebacker coach Steve Spagnuolo, who most recently served as the interim coach for the Giants, was on Philadelphia’s coaching staff back in 2005, and on Monday, he did an interview on Philly radio station 97.5 The Fanatic and made a series of serious allegations against the Patriots. Spagnuolo suggested the Patriots cheated during Super Bowl XXXIX by stealing signals from the Eagles throughout the course of the game. He claimed then-Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson realized what was happening about halfway through the contest. "I remember through the course of the game Jim saying, 'They’re getting our signals. They know when we’re blitzing…try to hide it, etc. etc.,'" Spagnuolo said. "I remember distinctly thinking, 'Jim, I don’t think that’s true.' Now I’m not saying this to him, because I just don’t want to upset him. I’m saying it to myself. 'I don’t think so, Jim, just concentrate on calling the game.' In hindsight, he was right. When you go back and look at that tape, it was evident to us." With the Interior Museum’s 80th anniversary in March 2018 comes the opportunity to reflect upon its innovative origins. Interior Secretary Harold Ickes envisioned the museum playing a key role at the new Interior headquarters, and when it opened in the midst of the Great Depression, it was a truly novel addition for a federal office building. Interior Museum Chief Curator Tracy Baetz will explore how one wing of the headquarters was popularly transformed into "history made vivid." Get a glimpse of how state-of-the art exhibition techniques of the 1930s achieved groundbreaking results that highlighted what was important to the Department in the interwar period.

ICPSR’s new data dissemination system is here! This is a recording of our live demo webinar on Thursday, February 15, 2018, during Love Data Week. This demo will take you through updated and more user-friendly data interfaces from data discovery, to evaluation, to download, usage, and interpretation. You will see improved navigation across studies, variables, data-related citations, series, and more. Our presenters are part of the team that envisioned, built, and launched this new data management system. It was built specifically for research data discovery, reuse, and preservation, and made possible by the meticulous data curation, including extensive metadata, that ICPSR curators undertake as they care for data brought into ICPSR’s holdings. Kate Flint: "Flash! - Photography, Writing, and Surprising Illumination" | Talks at Google

55:36
Kate Flint is Provost Professor of Art History and English at the University of Southern California. She has published "The Woman Reader, 1837-1914", "The Victorians and The Visual Imagination", and "The Transatlantic Indian 1776-1930", and has written widely on Victorian and modernist fiction, painting, photography, and cultural history. In this talk, Kate presents a fascinating cultural history of flash photography, from its mid-nineteenth century beginnings to the present day. All photography requires light, but the light of flash photography is quite distinctive: artificial, sudden, shocking, intrusive, and extraordinarily bright. Associated with revelation and wonder, it has been linked to the sublimity of lightning. Yet it has also been reviled: it's inseparable from anxieties about intrusion and violence, it creates a visual disturbance, and its effects are often harsh and create exaggerated contrasts.

Guerrilla Girls and Krzysztof Wodiczko In Conversation- Hirshhorn Museum

49:27
A thought-provoking discussion with acclaimed artists Guerrilla Girls and Krzysztof Wodiczko, two of the nearly 70 influential figures with works in “Brand New: Art & Commodity in the 1980s.” Since that pivotal decade, both artists have used their craft as a platform to inspire conversation about societal issues. The Guerrilla Girls are an iconic bedrock of feminist activism, with highly visible projects that expose bias and corruption in the world, and Wodiczko is similarly known for his large-scale projections on architectural façades that examine ideas about human rights and democracy. The artists are joined by Curator-At-Large Gianni Jetzer to discuss the continued impact of their work in contemporary public discourse. Feb. 13, 2018 Video thumbnail: Andrew Hindraker (2015)

A Mold Outbreak in Tbilisi, Georgia: Technical and Interpersonal Challenges

01:10:17
Randy Silverman discussed how the Tbilisi State University Library experienced a 15-year mold event that damaged 80,000 rare western books. Blue Shield Georgia's successful Cultural Emergency Response grant from the Prince Claus Fund (Amsterdam) supported a 10-day onsite assessment of the problem in January 2017. The consultant assembled conservators, the building's original architect, a preservation architect, and an air conditioning (HVAC) engineer to determine the cause of the bloom in the 1960-period building. Speaker Biography: Randy Silverman has served as the head of preservation at the University of Utah's Marriott Library since 1993. He teaches workshops on disaster planning for the Western States and Territories Preservation Assistance Service (WESTPAS), and is recognized for his national disaster recovery efforts. He has 80 professional publications and has presented professional lectures or workshops in 30 states and 13 foreign countries. He was given the American Library Association's Banks-Harris Preservation Award in 2013, received a Fulbright Specialists award in 2014 and was awarded the Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, Gardner Prize, for "outstanding academic contributions" in 2016. All the World Is Here: Anthropology on Display at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair

53:51
Ira Jacknis, Research Anthropologist, Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology, University of California, Berkeley The 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago was the first American fair to feature anthropology. The new discipline had its own building, supervised by Frederic Putnam, then director of Harvard University’s Peabody Museum. It competed, however, with another display of anthropology, organized by the Smithsonian Institution. In this lecture, Ira Jacknis will explore the many ways in which these exhibits offered competing versions of cultural reality and trace the innovations of anthropological display that have since become standard museum practice. Recorded 12/6/17
