Violent video games are awesome
A discussion about the benefits of playing violent video games.
Reasons Why Violent Video Games are Good
Do you know the reasons why violent video games are good? There's a study that shows that crime goes down the weekends new violent movies come out. The people most likely to get in a fight or commit some horrible act are busy going to see the new Hellraiser or Saw movie. So something like Evil Dead ten or Shoot Them Up 15 lessens crime. It gives people who like that kind of rough and tumble activity something to do for hours on end other than cruise the streets looking for fights. That may make violent video games the most cost effective crime prevention solution on the market. They even have a choice of their personal electronic tether method. Xbox versus Playstation? I really don't care as long as it keeps people busy, or, even, happy. It doesn't always lessen crime. The NSA was monitoring in game chats for various gaming groups because some of the players were negotiating drug deals while playing. I've heard that gamers are more psychopathic and that violent video games lead to more school shootings. There hasn't been an increase in school shootings over the past twenty years, only far more coverage. There were hundreds of stories on Columbine in the early 2000s and a thousand stories on Sandy Hook. So the perception is that it is worse. Violent crime as a whole is down fifty percent since the late 1980s, but coverage of it has increased because, as they say, if it bleeds, it leads. That might be due to the rise in gun sales and gun ownership, not violent video games. If we have millions more gun owners and tens of millions playing Gears of War and Halo, obviously these millions with video experience shooting up hundreds of other people aren't carrying that over into their daily lives. It would be funny if violence is down because people can literally go to their happy place when angry about work or being dumped -- an online gaming tournament. If virtual violence leads to less in the real world, and the cause isn't more people in the real world able to kill the offenders, then violent video games are a good thing.

Do Video Games Make You Smarter?

This study addresses whether these activities affect educational achievement in mathematics, reading, and science using the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's 2012 Program for International Student Assessment data set. The results suggest that using online social networks reduces academic achievement. Conversely, playing online games increases scores." Studies have pointed to their ability to improve cognitive function in multiple sclerosis patients as well as how we navigate the world. And now, new research shows that spending lots of time playing Super Mario at an early age benefits kids' mental health by making them more social, better in school, and overall more intelligent." Video Games And Aggressive Thoughts, Feelings, And Behavior In The Laboratory And In Life http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10794380 "Two studies examined violent video game effects on aggression-related variables. Study 1 found that real-life violent video game play was positively related to aggressive behavior and delinquency. The relation was stronger for individuals who are characteristically aggressive and for men. Academic achievement was negatively related to overall amount of time spent playing video games. In Study 2, laboratory exposure to a graphically violent video game increased aggressive thoughts and behavior. In both studies, men had a more hostile view of the world than did women." ____________________ DNews is dedicated to satisfying your curiosity and to bringing you mind-bending stories & perspectives you won't find anywhere else! By examining everything from cognitive puzzles ("brain games") to Grand Theft Auto, Jasper Coombes-Watkins shows us that the answer might not be as straightforward as we think. Dennis Santos: Video games aren't bad (persuasive speech) INGL 3250. Prof. C. Skerrett
Video games aren't bad persuasive speech Dennis M. Santos Rosado Prof. C. Skerrett Specific purpose: Convince the audience that video games aren't bad and maybe influence them to play more instead of scaring people away from them. Introduction: Do you want to exercise your brain but do something you like while you do it? Well it's very easy and I do it all the time, but from what you've heard about this method you might think It's not true, but I'm here to prove that what you have been told is wrong We usually say that video games are bad right? You have probably heard people say, especially parents, that they influence violence, give misleading themes, a waste of time and that it even creates health or mental problems. But do they have proof? I have proof that they don't! Fat, addictive, ruin relationships, create mask murderers Thesis statement: We let out parents and media tell us that video games are bad and use them as subjects to blame other problems as an excuse, but if you think about it, none of it is true. Body: I. Violence: A. Study shows no influence on violence The study, published in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, shows that violent video games do not cause teens to become aggressive. Even those teens dubbed "vulnerable" in the study (those with symptoms of ADD or depression) were not made aggressive. In fact, the study found that violent video games had a "slight calming effect" on vulnerable teens. B. Since video games violence has decreased According to the Times, between 1994 and 2010 the number of violent crimes among youth offenders fell by more than half, to 224 crimes per population of 100,000. At the same time, sales of video games have more than doubled since 1996. According to University of Texas at Arlington economist Dr. Michael Ward, one of the study's authors, high violent video game sales were related to a decrease in violent crime rates. C. Actually prevents violence (stress relief) Steve Thompson The mindless activity of punching buttons and watching the screen can effectively take the mind away from stressors and focus energy in a positive direction. D. Parent responsibility (box rating) -only so that parents have control of what their kids are playing Transition: but I've only taken a defensive position in telling you what video games aren't or don't do according to what parents and the media say. Let me talk to you about the benefits it gives you, starting with health II. Health: A. Improve eye sight B. Helps the ill C. Physiotherapy In controlled tests FPS -have faster and more accurate attention allocation - higher spatial resolution in visual processing and - enhanced mental rotation abilities. Quote Jordan Shapiro: "Preliminary research has also demonstrated that these cognitive advantages manifest in measurable changes in neural processing and efficiency." Which, best I can tell, means that gamers use their neural resources more efficiently--their brains don't show as much activity as non-gamer's brains show while solving problems. III. Intellectual growth: A. Increase IQ B. Better at taking tests C. Puzzle solving, HEC, etc. Decision making- Cognitive scientists from the University of Rochester have discovered that playing action video games trains people to make the right decisions faster. The action game players were up to 25% faster at coming to a conclusion and answered just as many questions correctly as their strategy game playing peers. D. Control Your Emotions John saphiro- quote "Gaming may be among the most efficient and effective means by which children and youth generate positive feelings." E. Influence creativity Daily mail-reasearch done by ROB WAUGH A study of nearly 500 12-year-olds found that the more kids played video games, the more creative they were in tasks such as drawing pictures and writing stories. IV. Social standpoint: John Saphiro- "Contrary to stereotypes, the average gamer is not a socially isolated, inept nerd." So many of today's games are multiplayer games that require interacting with other players. According to this paper, "over 70% of gamers play their games with a friend, either cooperatively or competitively." A. Coop play actually helps in social behavior and group activities B. Improve social skills C. Pro-social behavior will be more likely to occur Conclusion: Video games have so much more to offer in a beneficial way than negative and almost all the common arguments that we hear which target videogames as bad are invalid and untrue. A person should actually think about playing more instead of less. Unlike what is usually said by everyone, these are facts and no matter what is said, you can't beat facts, and the fact is that video games aren't bad.

Craig Anderson on the Effects of Violent Video Games
In 1971, the first commercially sold coin-operated video game opened the gates for the era of gaming as we know it. From those early days of “Computer Space”, video games have grown into a $74 billion dollar market worldwide. The wide appeal of video games has not been without controversy. Like rock’n’roll in the 50s, video games have been the objects of opposition from parent and religious groups, as well as politicians. Join us for an evening that will address some of the questions raised by the growing consumer demand for more video games. What effects do violent games have on behavior? Is there such a thing as video game “addiction”, and if so, is it curable? How can playing video games actually benefit your brain? The Neuroscience and Society series is a partnership between the Dana Foundation and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Heal your brain with video games | Jane McGonigal
What if playing a visually stimulating game could help alleviate brain injuries or the symptoms of PTSD? That is what game designer Jane McGonigal, proposes in this thought-provoking talk. What is she working on now? A game that has been proven to alleviate symptoms of depression. TEDArchive presents previously unpublished talks from TED conferences. Enjoy this unedited talk by Jane McGonigal . Filmed at TED2014. NOTE: Comments are disabled on this video. We made this difficult decision for the TED Archive because we believe that a well-moderated conversation allows for better commentary from more people and more viewpoints. Studies show that aggressive and hateful comments silence other commenters and drive them away; unfortunately, YouTube's comment moderation tools are simply not up to the task of allowing us to monitor comments on so many videos at once.
