A sort of tutorial on how to make the One And True Model Of Adventure Game using Adventure Game Studio, probably the most popular tool for making adventure games today. After making this video, several viewers pointed out better ways of doing things than what I showed in this video, and there eventually came to be enough improvements that I made a follow-up video to this one, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqCcfRsRTnI Here's a textual run-down of the extra information which I figured out after making and uploading this video: First of all, the thing which I say in the video about needing to use a pop-up command-input box is completely wrong! For some reason I failed to realize that even while the command-line GUI is visible, the game continues running in the background, and you can use the point-and-click interface of the game while the GUI is visible. So if you'd prefer to make a game which uses an AGI-style interface (where the command line is always visible at the bottom of the screen, instead of the SCI-style interface shown in this video where the command line pops up when you type something on the keyboard), all you have to do is make the GUI always visible instead of turning its visibility on and off. Just create a GUI that exists as a text box at the bottom of the screen, and it will always remain active; whatever letters the player types on the keyboard will go into the text box, but even while the command-line GUI is visible, they can continue to use the point-and-click interface as well. It's that simple! If you want the game to actually pause while the GUI pops up (as happens in Sierra's SCI games), you'll need to add some code to pause the game when the GUI pops up, and unpause the game after the player presses Enter. Thanks to my wonderful viewers, it turns out that there is indeed a way to make the command-line GUI work correctly with one if statement instead of creating 26 if statements, one for each letter of the alphabet. I'd put it here in the video description, but it turns out that according to YouTube, "Brackets aren't allowed in your description." Wow. You can see the code you need to use in the follow-up video linked above. The reason why the line which I start typing in at around 23:11 didn't work is because text boxes are handled by AGS in a completely different way from most other elements. When a text box becomes active, all keyboard input is redirected to the text box, and thus all on_key_press events stop working. If you do everything that I did in this video but remove the text box, then the line I typed under "if (keycode == eKeyReturn)" works fine. However, since we're working with a text box here, we need to do something a little different. Classically, text boxes in AGS were handled by the interface_click function. jayssite.com (which has a lot of helpful, but unfortunately sometimes dated, information about AGS) notes: "When the player presses Return in the text box, the interface_click function is called with the text box's GUI and object number. You can then use the TextBox.GetText script function to retrieve what they typed in." What's not clear is what we're supposed to do now that interface_click is labeled as "obsolete"--we're told that the function is obsolete but we're not told what we're supposed to use instead. I asked on the AGS forums and finally got the answer: All GUI elements can now have their own dedicated handler functions. If you click on the "cmdBox" text box in AGS Editor, click on the little lightning bolt icon in the Properties window, and then click on the "..." in the OnActivate section, you'll create a function especially for that text box called cmdBox_OnActivate, which will activate when the player presses Enter within the text box. This is easier than using interface_click for games which have more than one text box; although an adventure game which uses a text parser is probably likely to have only one text box for this purpose, it's still probably cleaner and more sensible to have a dedicated function just for that one text box rather than a catch-all function which applies to EVERY text box in the entire game, so I'd suggest doing it this new way if you're going to make an adventure game with a text parser in AGS.
