Fog is a cloud that reaches ground level, even if that "ground" is a hill or mountaintop. Mist forms wherever water droplets are suspended in the air by temperature inversion, volcanic activity, or changes in humidity. Fog is denser than mist and tends to last longer. In terms of visibility, fog reduces it to less than one kilometer (0.6 miles), while mist can reduce visibility to between 1 and 2 kilometers (0.6 - 1.2 miles). Various exterior shots of "Central Palace of Computers" LEAD IN: Computer gamers are getting the chance to try to topple a Cuban strongman. A new 3-D experience allows players to recreate decisive battles from the island's revolution in the 1950s. They get to fight alongside bearded guerillas clad in the olive green of Fidel Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara. STORYLINE: The mission, if gamers choose to accept it, is to help overthrow Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Developed by island programmers, "Gesta Final," or "Final Heroic Deed," gives young people an insight into the 1950's uprising, which involved many of their grandparents and which led to the ouster of Batista in 1959. "The children and youngsters of today like this type of product the most, so we tried to reflect the history of Cuba in a video game," says Haylin Corujo, of Cuba's Youth Computing Club, who lead the development team. "In 'Gesta Final' we primarily enact revolutionary deeds from 1956 to 1959." The game starts off with the user joining the 82 rebels who in 1956 sailed to Cuba from Mexico aboard the Granma, a creaky and now-iconic yacht that has become synonymous with the revolution. After a brief description of the historic landing, gamers find themselves wading through the wetlands of southeastern Cuba surrounded by fellow guerrillas, identifiable by the black-and-red armbands of Fidel and Raul Castro's revolutionary movement. Dark-helmeted Batista soldiers and mustard-yellow rural police pop out from behind trees and open fire from trucks and farmhouses. If you are hit three times, it is game over. The keyboard-operated game has five levels, most named after historical battles like "La Plata" and "El Uvero," and the scenery is full ancient vehicles and mountain trails typical of the Cuban countryside. "They themselves have said it helps to know, play, and deepen their knowledge of Cuban history." === You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/bc3249272af5ad73b72cf551ba2e3c4b Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

Globalization I - The Upside: Crash Course World History #41

11:51
In which John Green teaches you about globalization, a subject so epic, so, um, global, it requires two videos. In this video, John follows the surprisingly complex path of t-shirt as it criss-crosses the world before coming to rest on your doorstep, and eventually in your dresser. (Unless you're one of those people who never puts their laundry away and lives out of a laundry basket. If that's the case, shame on you.) Anyway, the story of the t-shirt and its manufacture in far-flung places like China, Guatemala, and India is a microcosm of what's going on in the global economy. Globalization is a bit of a mixed bag, and there have definitely been winners and losers along the way. In this episode John will talk about some of the benefits that have come along with it. Next week, he'll get into some of the less-positive side effects of globalization. Also, you should turn on the captions. Markiplier Contemplates a Banana for 5 Minutes

This might be the most important video I have ever made. There are no words to describe the beauty of what I have stumbled upon in my own home. So in this video, I say no words. Because words are only words and are meaningless when cast upon the winds of change. We are all but dust upon the wind and it's essential to take the time to understand that when gazing upon the infinite beauty of the universe. I hope that this groundbreaking video touches you in the same way this banana touched me. Pass down this lesson to all of your children and ensure that this message never leaves their heart. May the force be with you. Man (Dis)connected - Philip Zimbardo - What it Means to be Male in a Connected World

10:44
How are a new generation of men being effected by technology? No stranger to controversy - Psychologist and author Prof. Philip Zimbardo rocked the academic world in 1971 with his Stanford Prison Experiment. His research continued with such celebrated works as The Lucifer Effect, studies of time, heroism and Social intensity syndrome. In his latest book, Man (Dis)connected, Zimbardo explores the role technology is having on men academically, socially and sexually. In this #Disruptive Voices interview we caught up with Dr. Zimbardo during his book tour of the United Kingdom and asked him the effects the connected world is having on young men. He discusses internet, computer games & pornography addictions and how this is affecting a new generation of males. https://www.disruptive.live/watch/special/man-disconnected-philip-zimbardo/ Visit Disruptive : https://www.disruptive.live Follow Disruptive on Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/disruptivelive Like Disruptive on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/disruptivelive Transcript (continues on site): It's too easy for young people to live in a virtual world and give up the social world, the real world. Hi, I'm Philip Zimbardo - I am the founder and President of the Heroic Imagination Project and when I'm not talking about good and evil I'm talking about the impact of technology on young men everywhere in the world which I illustrate in my book "Man (Dis)connected' and there's an American version coming out next month called "Man Interrupted" which I did with Nikita Coulombe my young co-author. The problem is we now live in a world of technology. We have our cell phones, people walking down the street in America with a Starbucks coffee and a cell phone plugged into their ears. You see bunches of kids, teenagers, sitting around - no-one's talking to each other, they're all on their cell phone or they're watching a YouTube video. So technology has taken over. The danger is getting addicted to it. That it's just too easy for young people to live in a virtual world and give up the social world - the real world. Because it provides so much entertainment - with YouTube videos, everybody has endless Google searches and now, of course, the big media - Amazon - any movie you want, any song, you can have all the music in the world can be at your fingertips. And again, endless movies. And so I appreciate the value of that. My alarm that I'm sounding in this book is that for men who've grown up in the internet generation, maybe up to aged 29 now, meaning when they were little kids they were accessing internet. For those young men the internet has become too important. I mean important enough so that it replaces much of the real life connected with real people. So the two things that I focus on are video games and online free pornography - and now they're almost like, for me, a twin evil. There's nothing wrong with either of them - the problem is when you do it either in excess and when you do them in social isolation - for me that's the twin killer. You're all alone, five, six, eight, ten hours every day, every night - in your room playing video games, watching pornography and you're not interacting, you're not socialising. So for many young men they never learn social communication, they don't know how to carry on a conversation. We know if you programmed your computer or a robots to carry on a conversation - there's a thousand algorithms, a thousand rules they have to learn. And you only learn how to talk to people and feel comfortable doing it by observing others and by practicing and getting feedback. They don't observe others, they don't practice and so they feel awkward - and when you feel awkward you avoid it. So I'm arguing it's a new kind of shyness. The old shyness was, that I had studied for many years, was a fear of rejection. Now it's you don't know what to do - so it's not fear of rejection - it's almost as if you're in a foreign land and you don't know the language and you don't know how to ask where the loo is. So it's really that. Now, we do know that is lots of research that says playing video games in moderation can have positive cognitive effects - builds up sense of mastery, eye hand co-ordination. So it's really when does a moderate amount become excessive? Now, some people argue it's really not the number, it's not like "gee, when you do ten hours", it really becomes addictive when you prefer to do that than anything else. You would rather be playing video games than hanging out with your friends, than being in school, than playing sports, than being out in nature.

9 Proofs You Can Increase Your Brain Power

05:28
The human brain is probably the most mysterious organ in our body. Scientists keep learning new facts about its work, but it still hides lots of secrets. There are a few simple ways to boost your intellect and improve your brain power, and they will surely surprise you! TIMESTAMPS Chronic lack of sleep worsens memory 0:40 Prolonged stress destroys the brain 1:07 Love and hate have a lot in common 1:29 The brain is sensitive to dehydration 1:53 Pregnancy changes the brain’s structure 2:13 The abundance of sugar reduces the ability to learn 2:39 Romantic love and maternal feelings are very similar 3:25 Painting improves the work of the brain 3:58 Reading trains the brain 4:33 SUMMARY - During a full night’s sleep, brain cells remove toxic compounds dangerous to our brain. - A decrease in memory, in the ability to learn, in self-control — these are the consequences that chronic stress is fraught with.  - British scientists found out that love and hate originate in similar brain areas.  - Our brain is almost 80% water. - Scientists proved that pregnancy reduces the amount of gray matter in the brain areas responsible for social cognition and the ability to understand other people.  - The abundance of fructose in the diet slows down the brain and reduces its ability to learn, remember information, and concentrate.  - According to brain activity, romantic relationships and maternal feelings are very similar, but there are differences as well. - A study showed that painting and contemplation of works of art improve the interaction between brain areas while slowing its aging. - Oxford scientists proved that the process of reading trains the cognitive abilities of the brain. It also activates areas that aren’t used at other times. Expert: Violence on TV and Video Games Cause of Sandy Hook Massacre

55:14
"Systems education creates children who are systems-oriented, never doing anything " outside of the box" they have been trained to live in, whose behavior can be "measured" and remediated until it "fits" the profile designed by the "designers". And that profile is horrrendous, but useful for the planners." Not only should Americans point the finger at violent television as a reason for copycat violence. They should examine the effects of computers and computer games on the human brain. I am no expert, but the computer is an operant conditioning machine and no less than the late Harvard Professor B.F. Skinner, the father of operant conditioning, referred to it as "his box." Operant conditioning bypasses the brain with all the important functions which distinguish man from an animal: memory, conscience, imagination, insight, and intuition, functions by which human beings know absolutes and truths and are able to know God. http://fellowshipofminds.wordpress.com/2012/12/15/creating-a-shooter/ http://www.deliberatedumbingdown.com/index.html http://www.americandeception.com/index.php?page=home [The Education Special] http://www.infowarsshop.com/The-Education-Special_p_556.html Retail Price: $49.90 Your Savings: $5.00 Your Price: $44.90* This powerful DVD/book combo takes a very hard look at the current American education system. http://www.infowars.com/ http://www.prisonplanet.com/ http://www.infowars.net/ http://www.prisonplanet.tv/ sign up today and share your UserID/Passcode with 4 extra people!

Ready, Player One: How Video Games Affect Your Brain and Behavior

01:37:17
In 1971, the first commercially sold coin-operated video game opened the gates for the era of gaming as we know it. From those early days of “Computer Space”, video games have grown into a $74 billion dollar market worldwide. The wide appeal of video games has not been without controversy. Like rock’n’roll in the 50s, video games have been the objects of opposition from parent and religious groups, as well as politicians. Join us for an evening that will address some of the questions raised by the growing consumer demand for more video games. What effects do violent games have on behavior? Is there such a thing as video game “addiction”, and if so, is it curable? How can playing video games actually benefit your brain? How Media & Technology Affects Children | Child Development

03:21
Watch more Child Development Stages videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/513326-How-Media-and-Technology-Affects-Children-Child-Development Well, everybody knows that right now this is the age of technology and of media. Everyone has an Ipad; you know, gone are the days of the Gameboy. Now it's the Ipad, now it's the Iphone... now it's, you know, there's Youtube on there and everything else. Now it's just the days of going into a restaurant and you have to whip out the Ipad for the child. What kind of impact does that have on the child's development? Well, it has a lot of impact on them and not for the good! Sometimes it can help them with learning numbers and letters and there are some great games and that in about ten to twenty minutes a day max. When you're starting to use these things in place of other ways of learning, then it poses a problem. We're all in an age where communicating and engaging with people face to face is limited because everyone's already texting and emailing. So, we have to be very cognizant and very mindful that, you know, when we grew up as parents we were talking to each other and playing with each other. You want to be able to provide those opportunities for your children. So, if they're playing a game and watching TV, chances are they're not playing with a child and they're not learning common social skills. Everything that your child learns is through experience, through doing things with their peers. And also, they learn through observations. So, if they're watching you on your phone all day they may think 'well, that's the way to do it these days'. So, you also want to remember that what you do impacts your child's development as well. There are two things to know here; one is if your child is playing on the video games, watching TV, and are not outside on the playgrounds and are not engaging with their friends, then they are not playing and they should be. Two is that the impact that these toys have on your child can be significant because it's a lot of input. It's a lot of visual stimulation and you might find that they are not able to actually attend to people then because they are so used to looking at a screen rather than a person. Providing opportunities for your child to use an Ipad may not be detrimental; you can have them play a game for ten to twenty minutes a day, whatever time a day that is, and that's fine. But, once you begin to introduce that at meal time when out at restaurants consider this: your child will then always associate the Ipad with the restaurant. They'll never be able to have a meal and talk to you about their day because they'll just automatically assume that they're sitting at a restaurant having that Ipad. So, remember to keep the Ipad for times of learning and to encourage your child to connect with you, engage with you, and the same with their peers at meal time and at play time. Remember that these opportunities are so vital for your child to learn and grow because they learn through experience. Also through playing with their peers, and not exclusively through media and technology.

The "Indian Problem"

12:32
As American power and population grew in the 19th century, the United States gradually rejected the main principle of treaty-making—that tribes were self-governing nations—and initiated policies that undermined tribal sovereignty. For Indian nations, these policies resulted in broken treaties, vast land loss, removal and relocation, population decline, and cultural decimation. The "Indian Problem" was produced to serve as the central video in the exhibition "Nation to Nation: Treaties Between the United States and American Indian Nations," on view at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC. This video introduces visitors to the section of the exhibition titled "Bad Acts, Bad Paper."

Noel Woodward @ Busan KOTESOL Fluency Symposium

43:28
April 13, 2013 From: http://koreatesol.org/content/fluency-symposium-reading-noel-woodward Fluency Symposium -- Reading Intensive reading has been the focus of a lot of reading instruction in the second language class room with teachers showing students strategies to answer the standard style of comprehension questions post reading a short passage. Over the last few years Extensive reading has gained a lot of traction with research showing that for students to be good readers they need to read easy material in large quantities. The bridge between Extensive reading and Intensive reading is the concept of developing reading fluency. Research shows that reading fluency (reading quickly) leads to comprehension in Intensive reading and better scores on standard tests. Reading fluency also increases the amount of graded readers a student can read over a semester increasing all the benefits related to Extensive Reading. This presentation will examine some of the physiological processes involved with reading and what teaching strategies and activities teachers can use in class to develop reading fluency. Presentation goals Explain some of the processes behind reading and justify the activities presented. Look at some of the materials already available on the market to develop reading fluency. Describe some activities teachers can use in class to develop reading fluency. Noel Woodward has been teaching in Korea for over ten years at all levels and ages of students. Over that period he engaged in further study and received an MA Linguistics from University of New England. Over the last four years Noel has worked in the Teacher Training Program and the Graduate School of TESOL at Busan University of Foreign Studies. During that time working under the well-known in ER circles Rocky Nelson, Noel developed a keen interest in Extensive Reading and now runs Extensive Reading programs in both Teacher Training and Undergraduate courses. Noel's other interests include history, theology, cooking and computer games. Noel can be reached at [email protected]

YOW! Lambda Jam 2014 - Simple Game Programming - Nick Partridge

26:21
Several libraries that enable action game programming in Haskell have emerged, allowing us to play with game ideas in the strictest of functional programming environments. Come along for a brief introduction to game programming using Netwire, a library for functional reactive programming in Haskell. You will learn, perhaps surprisingly, how well functional programming fits with game programming models. In deconstructing the Wire type, we'll learn useful methods for thinking about complicated parametric data types. Our case studies are Flying Sheep Battles, a 2-player physics-based game written in Haskell over a weekend, and the presentation itself, which is also a Netwire application. For more on YOW!
