The Most Fun English Teaching (ESL) Game -- "Hot Seat"

04:28
A quick 4-minute description of how to play "Hot Seat" and a list of possible phrases to use! This game is great for a one-hour long lesson; it can also be used to teach Spanish and French, for example, to non-native speakers. To be honest it can be used to teach any language. My specialty is teaching using games. Some people underestimate the power of learning through fun; however, I embrace it to keep my students interested. This game, "Hot Seat" is one that must be played with your students. 01:29
Instructions: After you have gone through your regular daily lesson, worksheet, dialogue, or expression, you can play this game. 1. Divide class into two teams. 2. Assign one person from each team to do paper, rock, scissors. The winner gets to go last or first. They get five seconds to decide as a team. 3. Take out your phone or stopwatch to time the group to see how fast they go. 4. Record their time on the board under their points. 5. Repeat 3 and 4 for the other team(s). 6. Which ever team is the fastest gets one point for their team. 7. Repeat the process with a different expression that was studied. Time/Points: If the team makes a grammar mistake or a pronunciation mistake I add one second to their final time. Winners: The winners get to leave class first, which means they can get the best seat on the school bus.

How to Teach English (ESL) w/ Games & Activities

You can use games and activities throughout much of your lesson "if" you do it properly. Remember you need balance in your lesson. How do you feel about your teaching? Are you confident? Teacher Sam English Camp Games. Days of the week, Activities. ESL games and lesson plans.

02:00
Join this Facebook group: ฝรั่งสอนภาษาอังกฤษให้คนไทย Farang teaches English to Thai people https://www.facebook.com/groups/FarangSamEnglish/ Teacher Sam's English Camp Games เกมส์ภาษาอังกฤษของครูแซมที่ค่ายภาษาอังกฤษ. Today's topic is "Days of the week" (Class of 19 students). หัวข้อของวันนี้คือ "วันของสัปดาห์" Kids love to race each other. In this game they practice speaking about activities and practice listening for days of the week. 1. Split the class into two teams. Give 7 students from each team a coloured ball. Each colour means a day of the week. Yellow = Monday, Pink = Tuesday, Green = Wednesday, Orange = Thursday Blue = Friday, Purple = Saturday, Red = Sunday. 2. The teacher asks one student "What day do you (say any activity)?" e.g. "What day do you go swimming?" 3. All students with balls must listen carefully. The student says any day at random. e.g. "Monday" 4. One student from each team with a yellow ball (for Monday) must quickly run around the circle in a clockwise direction until they get back to their chair. 5. First student back to their chair gets 1 point. 6. The winning teams is the one with the most points after a set time or first to 10 points wins. 7. After a student has run around they should give their ball to a student that doesn't have a ball, so that they can take part in the game. Game 2 1. Write on the board, the days of the week with activities next to them e.g Monday - Swimming, Tuesday - Fishing, Wednesday - English class.... 2. The teacher say "Today I am (choose an activity from the board)" e.g. "Today I am going fishing" 3. Student must quickly check on the board, what day do I go "fishing". In this case Tuesday. So one student from each team with pink balls (for Tuesday) runs around the circle and the first student back to their chair gets 1 point. ***Alternatively instead of running, students could throw the ball into a basket in the middle of the circle. They can throw the ball as many times as they need but must always throw from their chair. First student to get the ball in the basket gets 1 point. Learn English by playing Final Fantasy 7! Let's play and learn!

22:15
Looking for a FUN way to learn English? Have you tried video games? That's right! In this lesson, I'll teach you English from the popular game Final Fantasy VII. This game has a great story and lets you "speak" with many characters about a variety of issues. Because of how interactive it is, you can really learn a lot of English from the game, especially vocabulary, expressions, and slang. I'll go over the first half hour of the game with you, and explain the English that the characters use. I think this is a great way to learn English: it's fun, it's engaging, and it forces you to learn key phrases and vocabulary. In a way, it's like traveling to an English speaking country! If you enjoy this video and want to see more like it, stick around until the end to see my views challenge! If you liked this video, you should also watch my video about learning English with STAR WARS! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpksX5p0J9k TAKE THE QUIZ ON THIS LESSON TO TEST YOUR UNDERSTANDING: http://www.engvid.com/learn-english-final-fantasy-vii/

A game to improve your spoken English - just a minute

04:02
This is a great game to help you improve your speaking. Two or more people can play together. The first person chooses a topic, the second person has to start talking about the topic and can not stop or pause. The other people listen for mistakes, if you spot a mistake, it is your turn to speak. Mistakes can be in your grammar, pronunciation, fluency (pausing), and vocabulary (repeating words) The person talking at the end of a minute gets a point, then you start again, Go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/radio/bbc_radio_four and look for 'just a minute' for more examples.

A workshop: English teaching games - Andy Travis

05:31
Friday February 13th 2015 was the first day of our free teacher training workshops of 2015 in Oxford TEFL Barcelona. On this day, Andy Travis, Oxford House teacher and actor, gave an interactive workshop which stimulated the imaginations of the workshop attendees into brainstorming, discussing, evaluating and finally participating in some of the top theatre games to use in an ESL classroom. Not only was this an opportunity to have fun with fellow TEFL teachers; attendees also received some useful and practical tips. One of the most important features of the workshop was when analyzing the way in which theatre games can be used to help students practice and retain language. Finally, everyone participated in contributing to the Top Games list. Take a look at the video which shows Andy describing what he had in store for our course participants, a short clip from the workshop and some feedback from our attendees.
Spoken-English Learning Cricket Game

03:33
The idea of 'Spoken-English Learning Cricket Game' was conceived during our ethnographic and participatory field-research on education in villages in Nuh block of Mewat district of Haryana. Mewat is one of the least developed district of Haryana despite being mere 50 kms away from highly urbanized center of Gurgaon and 70 kms of New Delhi. As per Census (2011), Mewat's average literacy rate is 56.10% while female-literacy remains very low at 37.1%. The students, teachers and local villagers voice the need to focus on development of Spoken English language skills. During our field-research, we observed the immense popularity of the game of Cricket among both male and female students of rural schools. Also, very few households have television sets and people are accustomed to listening cricket commentary on radio. Hence we decided to use the idea of game of Cricket, audio commentary to address the Spoken-English language learning. The content of the game is based on the books and the curriculum of the schools. The game is based on the Spoken Web platform from IBM Research India. The game is completely a server-side technology and hence independent of type of telephone device. The six-week of field-research was funded by STITPRO Foundation, a research funding body in The Netherlands. Partners: Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), IBM Research India, and SRF Foundation Contact: Abhigyan Singh ([email protected])

Using Group Games to Teach the Present Continuous Tense

Based on Stephen Krashen's theory of natural language, Louis Giancola creates a relaxed atmosphere for language learning, "lowering the affective filter" to help students take risks in learning the new language. He includes American baseball as content because some of the students had said they want to better understand the game. For more information, visit our website: www.mlots.org

I was too a few years ago and I was all on my own so I started creating English teaching materials that would make learning English FUN and exciting Hi! My name is Karlee Demierre but my kids know me as "Teacher Karlee"! I'm Canadian but for the past 3 years I have been living in the cute tropical beach town of Trujillo, Honduras. In 2012, My husband and I miraculously created an English Language school in 2 weeks ...which I like to refer to it as "The Gongshow" (Read the story on my site: http://www.englishlanguagegames.org/english-language-games/dream-come-true/ ) I've now been teaching English as a Second Language full time for a year at my school and absolutely love it! I teach 2 year old kids all the way up to adults, from the very basics to beginner to intermediate. This all began because I had been teaching an ESL beginners class to kids in Trujillo, Honduras for 2 years. Most ESL children's classes have between 4 to 20 kids... well I threw myself in a classroom of 30 to 40 "untamed" pre-school and kindergarden kids! (just to prove my sanity... I even volunteered!!) With no curriculum, no lesson plans, no previous experience and no guidance, I was on my own diving into this fun adventure called teaching English as a Second Language! The best part was that during this "adventure of mine", I discovered that teaching kids was truly my life's passion! A few years ago, I started to search online to get some ideas and I soon discovered that there wasn't much available that would keep these kids engaged, encourage them to participate in class and overall really learn English. So I started creating English language games and other English teaching materials that would engage my kids, accelerate their learning and really make learning English FUN for them! You might also be surprised to know that this vocabulary appears in movies a lot! I will teach you the card names, suits, and the names of some combinations to help you win! You will learn the meaning of "bluff", "royal flush", "full house", "poker face", "three of a kind", and more. So grab your best lucky charms, and get ready to play. Good luck! Take the quiz on this lesson at: http://www.engvid.com/vocabulary-expressions-for-poker-and-other-card-games/ TRANSCRIPT Oh, there we are. Hi there. Welcome to poker night with Ronnie. Do you know how to play poker? Maybe? Do you know how to play poker in English? I'm going to teach you. I know how to play poker. I am not very good at playing poker; I always seem to get really terrible cards, no fault of my own. Very skilled in the game, just bad luck. Luck of the draw is not with me. I'm going to put my old-school video camera away, and we're going to learn how to play some poker in English. So, the first thing that we need to know about poker is it's a game. Woo-hoo. It's become very, very, very popular online because you can get a lot of money. The way I learned to play poker was my father taught me, after many a grape soda, sitting around the kitchen table, betting matchsticks. So, welcome to my childhood. I learned how to play poker. What did you do? The most important thing is to learn the name of the cards in English. So, probably you know: A, K, Q, J, 10, and the numbers, but these actually have names. The "A" is the Ace. The "K" is the King. The "Q" is the Queen. The Jack is the "J". Then it goes from 10 all the way down to 2. There is no 1. Sometimes the ace can be used as a 1, but that's too complicated, and I'm not going to tell you my tricks. Well, you're going to lose anyway, so might as well. The other thing that we need to know is what to call the cards. So, these are suits. Not... Suit? Suit, suit, suits... Suits, they're called... I don't know why they're called suits, they're just suits. So, the suits means: Hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. Now, when I was a child, I had a very stupid brother. Still do. Mm-hmm. And for some reason, he said shovels. Okay? It's a spade, buddy; not a shovel. Get it right. Okay? So, hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades are the proper names of these. So, now you know the vocabulary of the wor-... Of the cards. I'm going to teach you some verbs that you need. The first one probably you know, is a bluff. "Bluff" means you have a face... Oh, Lady Gaga go away. Mm-hmm. Poker Face. Do you know what that means? "Poker face" means you are expressionless. Usually you have a baseball hat, so people can't see your eyes. But a bluff is when you do not let your face show your cards or what you're doing. So, if you're betting money or matchsticks and you want to bluff, you're going to pretend that you have a fabtabulous hand. Now, "the hand" means what cards you have. So, I'm going to pretend that I have the highest cards ever, called a "royal flush". So I would not make expressions with my face, and I would bet a lot of money. I would be bluffing, because maybe I have really, really bad cards. I always have bad cards. So, "bluff" means to, like, lie and pretend you have really, really good cards. The most important word is "bet". "Bet" means you put in money that you're going to lose or win, depending. Before they even deal the cards-"deal the cards" means you give them to people- there's something called an "ante". An "ante", not your mother's sister, means a forced bet before the deal. So, if we were playing cards or playing poker, and I have lots of money, I would ante $100. I would never do that. And then everyone else that wants to play would have to put in, automatically, $100, even before we look at our cards. Scary. What happens is we have the first bet is called "open". So, it would be my turn, I could open, which means I would put in money; or if I did not want to, I could "check" or "pass". This means I don't want to play with money. I'm just like: "No. Enh, we'll see what happens." If I have a really, really, really terrible hand, which means my cards are not good, I would do what's called "folding" or "fold". I would say: "Fold." Fold means: "This is terrible, I'm out. I end the game. I'm no longer playing this." When you bet, you can "call", which means you match what the other person has bet. For example, if the person before me bet $10, I would call, and I also would put in $10. If I wanted to get more money from people, I would "raise the pot", which means I would put in my $10, and I would add more money. So, if I had a really good hand, I would say: "I call the 10, and I raise you 50." So the other people playing, if they wanted to stay in the game, would have to put in $50.

Learn English with THE HUNGER GAMES

18:30
Let the games begin! Reading is a great way to improve your English, but it's sometimes difficult to know which book to start with. In this informative lesson, I explain why The Hunger Games is a good first novel choice for intermediate and advanced-level English learners. I also look at 10 vocabulary items from chapter 1 of the book, including words such as "swollen", "abandoned", and "upbeat". Get a FREE audiobook of THE HUNGER GAMES at: http://www.engvid.com/out/audiblealex Get the print or ebook editions of THE HUNGER GAMES from: http://www.engvid.com/out/amz_hunger TRANSCRIPT Oh, hello. I didn't see you there. I'm Alex. Thanks for clicking, and welcome to this lesson on how to learn English with books. Today, I'm looking at a very specific book. This is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It is a young adult novel that is very popular, and has been turned into a movie, and is easy to find everywhere. So, in this lesson, I'm going to talk about why The Hunger Games is a great book to start for new intermediate English learners, and also, I'm going to talk about 10 items of vocabulary from chapter one of the book. If you'd like to get a copy of the book yourself, you can check out the link to Amazon attached to this video for a physical copy, and if you're interested in an audio version of the book, you can actually link to www.Audible.com where, if you do sign up, you get your first book free, so you can get The Hunger Games, you can get classics like 1984, you can find newer books as well. So, if you're interested in that, check out the links attached to the video. And now, let the games begin. So, like I mentioned, The Hunger Games is a good book for intermediate English students for a number of reasons. First of all, The Hunger Games is written in the first person, so there is a lot of: "I", "I", "I", just like you normally speak in everyday life, where the most common personal pronoun you use is probably "I". Second of all, it is written in the present tense. Now, I don't mean that the book doesn't have future tense, or past tense, or conditionals. It has all those things, but the primary tense it uses with the character speaking is the present. So, now, I'm going to read you the first paragraph of the book so you can see what I mean. "When I wake up, the other side of the bed is cold. My fingers stretch out, seeking Prim's warmth, but finding only the rough canvas cover of the mattress. She must have had bad dreams, and climbed in with our mother. Of course she did. This is the day of the reaping." So, you see "is", you hear: "The other side of the bed is cold when I wake up." Present simple. Now, not only does this make it a little easier for new English learners or intermediate English learners to read the book because the present tenses are usually the first ones you learn, it also makes the book a lot more engaging, interesting, and exciting, because everything feels a lot more present. There's no other way to put it. Third of all, The Hunger Games, as you probably know if you're watching this video, or maybe you don't know, is very popular. Now, you might be thinking: "Why is this a good thing if I'm choosing a book to learn English?" Well, number one: It's really easy to find. Whether you're looking for the audio book or if you're looking for a physical copy, if you're looking for the e-book - every website, every store will have stacks and stacks of copies of this book. This also means there are multiple translations. This might also mean that you have already read this book in your own language, and it might be a good idea, now, to read it in English, because you're already familiar with the content, the characters, and what the action is like in the book. Fourth, it does have an interesting story. Is it my favorite book of all time? No, it's not, but it is pretty interesting. There is a dystopian world, a tyrannical government that's ruling everyone, and there's a strong female hero.
