Zombicide: Invader finishes the month in spot number 28 on our countdown. But, will it rise again? THE MIND The Mind is played over several rounds, and each player starts each round with a hand of cards equal to its number: one card in round 1, two cards in round 2, etc. These cards must then be played to a shared discard pile in ascending order. However, players cannot communicate with one another in any way as they do so. If players can discard all their cards in the proper order throughout all the rounds, they win! The Mind exploded up the charts a few weeks ago, settling in at spot 22 for the month. IMPERIUS In Imperius, players draft cards which provide them with ambassadors, assassins, elders, nobles, and even powerful variable events. Players then deploy their cards to planets with the hopes of scoring victory points while and depriving their enemies of the same. Some cards are played face up for all to see, but some cards will be deployed face down, adding a nice dash of tension to the proceedings. But the villain is not alone. They have access to a team of henchmen at their disposal as well. Batman: Gotham City Chronicles is being developed by Monolith, the same company that developed a game based on Conan The Barbarian a few years ago. The game-play in Batman: Gotham City Chronicles is based on that of Conan, but introduces revised character abilities, two new types of dice, and a new two-player Versus Mode. STUFFED FABLES In Stuffed Fables, players take on the roles of heroic stuffed animals, seeking to save the child they love from a scheming, evil mastermind. The game’s narrative is driven by the choices the players will make during the game. The chapters of Stuffed Fables explore the many milestones of a child's life. And when I say chapters, I mean “chapters”. Stuffed Fables is the first in a series of what’s being called "Adventure Book” games, in which the action takes place in a storybook; which acts as the rules reference, story guide, and game board, all in one! Each adventure spans several pages of Adventure Book, which opens flat onto the table during the game. The desired result for this approach is a branching, overarching story that is accessible enough for young players, while still being rewarding enough for older ones. SPIRIT ISLAND Greater Than Games recently reached out and provided me with several interesting tidbits of trivia about Spirit Island's design and development. Here’s a couple of them: “A fair number of people wonder what the Fear markers are supposed to represent. (Three common guesses being "a skull and crossbones", "a panda", and "a turtle".) But if you take a look at the Spirit illustration for Bringer of Dreams & Nightmares and you may notice some similarity of shape. Additionally, many Spirits were playtested during the game’s development that never made it into the final publication, for one reason or another. However, there are still oblique references to a number of them in one of the Branch & Claw Scenarios.” RISING SUN Rising Sun was a phenomenal success on Kickstarter, raising 4.2 million dollars. Even people who only back a couple Kickstarters a year backed it. Rising Sun is a spiritual successor in the same mythic big box series as Blood Rage: same designer, same artist, same studio and same sculptors. But, whereas Blood Rage could theoretically trace its ancestry all the back to a game like Risk, Rising Sun’s lineage would branch off, leading more towards a game like Diplomacy as its distant ancestor. In the game, players must master diplomatic negotiations, forming and breaking alliances, and warfare when the time comes. ENDEAVOR: AGE OF SAIL Endeavor: Age Of Sail takes place back when the globe was still being explored, and new worlds were still being discovered. Players will compete to expand their nations by sending out ships to search out new lands, establish new alliances, and conquer whatever obstacles stand in their way. The game requires players to balance exploration, shipping, colonization and war - in order to seize control of valuable resources and regions that that are discovered as the game progresses. This appears to be accomplished by way of card drafting, set collection, and controlling key areas. CHARTERSTONE In Charterstone, players construct buildings and populate a shared village by permanently adding stickers to the game board. The game starts off with just a few simple choices, but the number of options increases as the games progress. I reached out to Jamey Stegmaier of Stonemaier Games for any interesting tidbits or trivia about the design of the game, and this is what he said: “The final version of Charterstone features 100 building cards, which each have a building sticker that gets placed on the board as players construct their charters, becoming a newly available action space. The remaining card also serves a purpose, as it has a ‘crate’ number on it that lets you unlock new content later. However, originally the building cards offered another bonus as well: An instant bonus was going to be printed underneath the sticker, and revealed when it was peeled off the card. Fortunately the manufacturer tested this early in the design process, and they discovered that the waxy material underneath the sticker isn’t good at all for printing content on. Players are members of a colony called Otys, and they must retrieve the the debris of past civilizations from the depths of the sea in order to build a foundation solid enough to support the future of humanity. Otys was released in November, 2017. CHARTERSTONE Charterstone is a competitive legacy game, in which players construct buildings and populate their sector of a shared village. As with most legacy-style games, stickers are used to make permanent additions to the game board and rule book, allowing the game to evolve and grow over the course of a dozen or so game sessions. Since Charterstone is a legacy game, I don’t want to say too much about it and risk giving away spoilers. However, I will say that, as a fan of legacy-style games to begin with, I was looking forward to Charterstone’s arrival for a long time. And, having now played through about a third of its campaign, it has not disappointed. If you’re curious about what legacy games can have to offer, I recommend giving Charterstone a try. UBOOT: THE BOARD GAME UBOOT: The Board Game is a fully cooperative, real-time tabletop game of WW2 submarine warfare, in which 1 to 4 players assume the roles of the Captain, the First Officer, the Navigator, and the Chief Engineer on board of a U-boat. The game is driven by a companion app, allowing for a heightened level of realism, as well as an enemy controlled by A.I. The game claims to require demanding teamwork, efficient crew management, and quick situation assessment in order for the players to emerge victorious. UBOOT: The Board Game reaches spot #31 overall this month. Will it continue to rise, or sink back down into the countdown’s depths? I’m sure we’ll find out as the game gets closer to its expected October release. CAT LADY In Cat Lady, players are cat ladies, part of an elite group of people including Marie Antoinette and Ernest Hemingway. During the game, players draft cards and collect toys, food, catnip, costumes, and of course lovable cats. But watch out! Wasteland Express Delivery Service is available now. PHOTOSYNTHESIS Photosynthesis by Blue Orange Games. Photosynthesis boasts a unique theme: being a tree. In this game, the sun shines brightly on the canopy of the forest, and the trees use its energy to grow and develop their leaves. If players sow their plants’ seeds wisely, the the shadows of their growing trees will slow their opponents down, giving them an advantage. However, there’s a mechanism in the game that tracks the sun as it revolves around the forest. Trees planted in the wrong position can end up doing more harm than good to a player’s score as they grow and the board evolves. Photosynthesis was the fifth hottest game on the Board Game Geek Gen Con preview tool, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we see this one stick around on the countdown for a while. SPIRIT ISLAND Spirit Island by Greater Than Games takes place in a world where magic still exists, embodied by spirits of the land, of the sky, and of every natural thing. As European colonists begin to encroach on the land the spirits inhabit, the land itself fights back alongside the islanders who live there. MASSIVE DARKNESS Spot number two this month belongs to Massive Darkness, a game designed to bring the classic fantasy RPG experience to modern board gaming. The tools in its arsenal that it uses to achieve this include: a ready-to-go campaign, lots of highly detailed fantasy miniatures, and a character development system that works to keep the focus on the heroes' actions. This is a cooperative game in that there is no game master; the monsters and obstacles are controlled by the game itself. Massive Darkness’ core was built on the Zombicide engine, expanding it out to be a more traditional dungeon crawl RPG experience. I got a chance to play a short demo of the game earlier this year at the CMON Expo, and one of the game mechanisms that was discussed was its unique XP acquisition system, which allows players to level up their characters fairly whether they’re playing single adventures, or in a campaign mode - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - All the game on this month's Top 10 board games countdown are: 10. As in Terra Mystica, players will be able to choose from fourteen different factions to develop and grow a myriad of different planets. Players will need to use their wits and talents to terraform neighboring planets into environments suited for their faction. I personally have had The Gaia Project on my wish list for several months. And, while the game has started shipping to some parts of the world, I believe it should become available in north american retailers around December 14th. TERRAFORMING MARS: VENUS NEXT The next expansion for Terraforming Mars will be Venus Next, which is currently estimated to be released on December 27th. In this second expansion for the game, players will construct flying cities while working to make the Venusian atmosphere hospitable to human life. This expansion adds around 50 project cards, 5 corporations, and a new resource, milestone, award, and a new terraforming parameter. All of which introduce more paths to victory. AZUL In Azul, players take on the role of craftsmen working on the King’s palace, and take turns drafting colored tiles. As a tile-laying artist, you have been challenged to embellish the walls of the Royal Palace of Evora. They will then score points based on how they've used the tiles they’ve selected to decorate the palace. Extra points are scored for specific patterns and completing sets, and wasted supplies harm their score. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins. PANDEMIC LEGACY: SEASON 2 In Pandemic Legacy: Season 2, the world has been ravaged by a virulent plague and humanity's very survival hangs in the balance. Players must work together against the game to get the world’s last remaining cities the supplies they need while unraveling the mysteries of the plague that has afflicted them. And, in the typical legacy game fashion, each step the players take leaves a permanent mark on the game world, changing the course of history, and resulting in a unique gaming experience. Whenever a faction stands on one of the access points, they can try to conquer the Sky Island with the matching symbol. TERRAFORMING MARS EXPANSION: VENUS NEXT Edging up a notch to spot number three this month is, once again, Terraforming Mars. This is likely helped by the fact that information about the game’s second expansion, Venus Next, has recently become available. This yet-unreleased expansion has players building flying cities and making the atmosphere more hospitable on the deadly planet Venus. This expansion adds around 50 project cards and 5 corporations, with a special focus on how to make Venus habitable. With the new floater resource, a new milestone, a new award, a new tag, and a new terraforming parameter, players will also have more paths to victory to choose from. THE 7th CONTINENT 2nd KICKSTARTER The 7th Continent was in development for nearly two years after its original KickStarter, but finally started shipping to its backers earlier this summer. Initial reports by players suggests that the game was certainly worth the wait. But, as with many Kickstarters, those who didn’t back it months and months ago when it was still an unknown game have been, unfortunately, unable to easily obtain a copy. Well, as of the time of this recording, a new Kickstarter is currently running for the second printing of 7th Continent. This Kickstarter runs through October 19th, 2017, and it’s not only an opportunity to score a copy of the second printing of the game, and all of the previous Kickstarter campaign’s stretch goals, but also new content in the form of the “What Goes Up, Must Come Down” add on, a “Satchel & Journal” binder, and even more stretch goals being unlocked.
