Find this game and many more in my book "ESL Games for Kids - Proven Ideas for Teaching English Through Listening Exercises, Fun Activities and Games" http://amzn.to/1b2HblS DAY 7 - Spread out the numbers 0 to 9 on the floor (use big foam numbers if you can or if not just writing the numbers on a piece of paper will do just fine) Then give one of the numbers to a kid and tell them to go make a certain number that you call out. For. Ex. If a kid has #1 then you could tell them to go make #13 and the'd have to find the 3 and put the 1 in front of it. Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/englishlanguagegames Twitter: http://www.twitter/ESLchildren Website: http://www.EnglishLanguageGames.ORG Are you an ESL teacher looking for some fun English language games to use in your ESL beginners class? I was too a few years ago and I was all on my own so I started creating English teaching materials that would make learning English FUN and exciting Hi! My name is Karlee Demierre but my kids know me as "Teacher Karlee"! I'm Canadian but for the past 3 years I have been living in the cute tropical beach town of Trujillo, Honduras. In 2012, My husband and I miraculously created an English Language school in 2 weeks ...which I like to refer to it as "The Gongshow" (Read the story on my site: http://www.englishlanguagegames.org/english-language-games/dream-come-true/ ) I've now been teaching English as a Second Language full time for a year at my school and absolutely love it! I teach 2 year old kids all the way up to adults, from the very basics to beginner to intermediate. This all began because I had been teaching an ESL beginners class to kids in Trujillo, Honduras for 2 years. Most ESL children's classes have between 4 to 20 kids... well I threw myself in a classroom of 30 to 40 "untamed" pre-school and kindergarden kids! (just to prove my sanity... I even volunteered!!) With no curriculum, no lesson plans, no previous experience and no guidance, I was on my own diving into this fun adventure called teaching English as a Second Language! The best part was that during this "adventure of mine", I discovered that teaching kids was truly my life's passion! A few years ago, I started to search online to get some ideas and I soon discovered that there wasn't much available that would keep these kids engaged, encourage them to participate in class and overall really learn English. So I started creating English language games and other English teaching materials that would engage my kids, accelerate their learning and really make learning English FUN for them! My mission is that these English language games will spark participation and ignite learning in your ESL beginners class. My goal is to give you some English teaching materials that will make it easy for you to teach ESL children and make it FUN for the kids to learn English! So I'm setting out to share my JOY with the world and I hope these English teaching materials and other ideas I share will help bring more LAUGHTER and PARTICIPATION to your ESL children's class and all the kids you LOVE! ... keep PLAYING and LEARNING! 2 fun new ways to learn English vocabulary

10:49
Learning a new language is difficult and boring. Every student learns differently, and it's important to find a study method that is right for YOU. I want to put the fun back into studying English with two methods that are fun and which make learning easier and quicker! In this lesson, I will teach you how to make connections between words in order to remember them more easily. I will also reveal my hidden poet talents, so you don't want to miss this one! http://www.engvid.com/2-fun-new-ways-to-learn-english-vocabulary/ TRANSCRIPT Yeah, that was fun. I'm looking forward to hearing that from you later. Hi. James from engVid. In this video what I would like to do is help you work on vocabulary. I want to make it fun, because when things are fun, you work harder and you learn more. And today's lesson, I'm going to teach you two ways to not only just remember vocabulary, but learn how to use vocabulary in a way that we use it, and you will really understand it, and... Heck, it's fun. You're just going to have fun doing it. I'm sure you will. All right? It's a little bit creative. So, let's go to the board. Simple lesson. Here we go. Two ways to have fun with language. Not just language, but vocabulary. Ways that you may not be studying in class, we're going to do here today. The first one I want to talk to you about is fill in the gap. Huh? "A gap" means a space, there's a space between something. So, here's my hands, in between my hands is a gap. Okay? You have a gap between your eyes. One eye, one eye, space. In this case, you see I've got this: "tree __________ chair". Now, fill in the gap doesn't mean just one word. It's a couple of ways you can do this. In this particular game, we're going to take two vocabulary words, "tree", and take another one, "chair", and they're kind of a little obvious to make it easy for you, but what I want you to do is one of two things. The first thing we can do is use x words. What I mean by that is you could say: "I want to use five words, and I want to go from 'tree' to 'chair'." Or: "I want to use three words from 'tree' to 'chair'" or two. Huh? Well, okay. How do I get from "tree"? Okay. "Tree", "cut". You cut the tree down, right? "Lumber". Lumber you make into wood you can use. Let's see. "Carpenter". Find a carpenter. "Craft". "Craft" means make. You're like: "What?" These... All these words... And then I can say: "Furniture". Okay? Okay, furniture. "Chair", so if I have a tree, I cut it down and make it into lumber, I take it to a carpenter, he crafts it into a chair. Five words from A to B. So, one game is tell yourself: "I want to go from five... One word to another word, and I want five words to get there." And you can challenge yourself; maybe go from three words. Right? Or make 10 words. You can use it to describe something. How many words you can use to describe a certain thing. Right? "I have this word, and I want to go to this word. How many words does it take me to get there?" What this does is it teaches you relationship between words, and that also can teach you nouns and verbs, and how they function together. Or, we say "syntax", right? So, start at A, say: "I want to use five words to get there." This is a great word to do with a friend. You can say: "Okay, we're going to do 'tree' and 'chair', you need to do five words that make sense to go from 'tree' to 'chair'", and put a clock on for five minutes. You go, and she goes, you write together and see what words you get. Compare, check them out. "Why did you choose this, and why does this word...? What does this word mean?" Right? So, now, you're not just writing words in a book and saying: "This word means this." You're: "What does it mean? How do I use it? How would other people use it? How would other people think?" Right? Yeah. See? That's fun by yourself or with a friend. Okay, listen, the second way to play this game is: How many words to the answer? What? Well, we can pick up two random words, two, like... I have "chair"... "Tree" and "chair", we could have put "chair" and "moon". Now the game gets a little bit more interesting. Right? "Chair" and "moon". How many words does it get me to go from "chair" to "moon"? Now, you might say: "That's impossible. They have nothing to do with each other." I could say, "Listen, the chair in my living room"-"living room" is a noun-"sits"-which is a verb-"close to the big bay window where I can see the moon at night." How many words did it take me to get from "chair" to "moon"? So, it's playing with words, being creative.

Looking for a FUN way to learn English? Have you tried video games? That's right! In this lesson, I'll teach you English from the popular game Final Fantasy VII. Because of how interactive it is, you can really learn a lot of English from the game, especially vocabulary, expressions, and slang. Learn English – Vocabulary & Expressions for POKER and other card games

12:51
Do you know how to play the game of poker? If so, can you play it in English? After watching this fun lesson, you will be able to play a game of poker or any other card game using English vocabulary. You might also be surprised to know that this vocabulary appears in movies a lot! I will teach you the card names, suits, and the names of some combinations to help you win! You will learn the meaning of "bluff", "royal flush", "full house", "poker face", "three of a kind", and more. So grab your best lucky charms, and get ready to play. Good luck! Take the quiz on this lesson at: http://www.engvid.com/vocabulary-expressions-for-poker-and-other-card-games/ TRANSCRIPT Oh, there we are. Hi there. Welcome to poker night with Ronnie. Do you know how to play poker? Maybe? Do you know how to play poker in English? I'm going to teach you. I know how to play poker. I am not very good at playing poker; I always seem to get really terrible cards, no fault of my own. Very skilled in the game, just bad luck. Luck of the draw is not with me. I'm going to put my old-school video camera away, and we're going to learn how to play some poker in English. So, the first thing that we need to know about poker is it's a game. Woo-hoo. It's become very, very, very popular online because you can get a lot of money. The way I learned to play poker was my father taught me, after many a grape soda, sitting around the kitchen table, betting matchsticks. So, welcome to my childhood. I learned how to play poker. What did you do? The most important thing is to learn the name of the cards in English. So, probably you know: A, K, Q, J, 10, and the numbers, but these actually have names. The "A" is the Ace. The "K" is the King. The "Q" is the Queen. The Jack is the "J". Then it goes from 10 all the way down to 2. There is no 1. Sometimes the ace can be used as a 1, but that's too complicated, and I'm not going to tell you my tricks. Well, you're going to lose anyway, so might as well. The other thing that we need to know is what to call the cards. So, these are suits. Not... Suit? Suit, suit, suits... Suits, they're called... I don't know why they're called suits, they're just suits. So, the suits means: Hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. Now, when I was a child, I had a very stupid brother. Still do. Mm-hmm. And for some reason, he said shovels. Okay? It's a spade, buddy; not a shovel. Get it right. Okay? So, hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades are the proper names of these. So, now you know the vocabulary of the wor-... Of the cards. I'm going to teach you some verbs that you need. The first one probably you know, is a bluff. "Bluff" means you have a face... Oh, Lady Gaga go away. Mm-hmm. Poker Face. Do you know what that means? "Poker face" means you are expressionless. Usually you have a baseball hat, so people can't see your eyes. But a bluff is when you do not let your face show your cards or what you're doing. So, if you're betting money or matchsticks and you want to bluff, you're going to pretend that you have a fabtabulous hand. Now, "the hand" means what cards you have. So, I'm going to pretend that I have the highest cards ever, called a "royal flush". So I would not make expressions with my face, and I would bet a lot of money. I would be bluffing, because maybe I have really, really bad cards. I always have bad cards. So, "bluff" means to, like, lie and pretend you have really, really good cards. The most important word is "bet". "Bet" means you put in money that you're going to lose or win, depending. Before they even deal the cards-"deal the cards" means you give them to people- there's something called an "ante". An "ante", not your mother's sister, means a forced bet before the deal. So, if we were playing cards or playing poker, and I have lots of money, I would ante $100. I would never do that. And then everyone else that wants to play would have to put in, automatically, $100, even before we look at our cards. Scary. What happens is we have the first bet is called "open". So, it would be my turn, I could open, which means I would put in money; or if I did not want to, I could "check" or "pass". This means I don't want to play with money. I'm just like: "No. Enh, we'll see what happens." If I have a really, really, really terrible hand, which means my cards are not good, I would do what's called "folding" or "fold". I would say: "Fold." Fold means: "This is terrible, I'm out. I end the game. I'm no longer playing this." When you bet, you can "call", which means you match what the other person has bet. For example, if the person before me bet $10, I would call, and I also would put in $10. If I wanted to get more money from people, I would "raise the pot", which means I would put in my $10, and I would add more money. So, if I had a really good hand, I would say: "I call the 10, and I raise you 50." So the other people playing, if they wanted to stay in the game, would have to put in $50.

Learn English with THE HUNGER GAMES

18:30
Let the games begin! Reading is a great way to improve your English, but it's sometimes difficult to know which book to start with. In this informative lesson, I explain why The Hunger Games is a good first novel choice for intermediate and advanced-level English learners. I also look at 10 vocabulary items from chapter 1 of the book, including words such as "swollen", "abandoned", and "upbeat". Get a FREE audiobook of THE HUNGER GAMES at: http://www.engvid.com/out/audiblealex Get the print or ebook editions of THE HUNGER GAMES from: http://www.engvid.com/out/amz_hunger TRANSCRIPT Oh, hello. I didn't see you there. I'm Alex. Thanks for clicking, and welcome to this lesson on how to learn English with books. Today, I'm looking at a very specific book. This is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It is a young adult novel that is very popular, and has been turned into a movie, and is easy to find everywhere. So, in this lesson, I'm going to talk about why The Hunger Games is a great book to start for new intermediate English learners, and also, I'm going to talk about 10 items of vocabulary from chapter one of the book. If you'd like to get a copy of the book yourself, you can check out the link to Amazon attached to this video for a physical copy, and if you're interested in an audio version of the book, you can actually link to www.Audible.com where, if you do sign up, you get your first book free, so you can get The Hunger Games, you can get classics like 1984, you can find newer books as well. So, if you're interested in that, check out the links attached to the video. And now, let the games begin. So, like I mentioned, The Hunger Games is a good book for intermediate English students for a number of reasons. First of all, The Hunger Games is written in the first person, so there is a lot of: "I", "I", "I", just like you normally speak in everyday life, where the most common personal pronoun you use is probably "I". Second of all, it is written in the present tense. Now, I don't mean that the book doesn't have future tense, or past tense, or conditionals. It has all those things, but the primary tense it uses with the character speaking is the present. So, now, I'm going to read you the first paragraph of the book so you can see what I mean. "When I wake up, the other side of the bed is cold. My fingers stretch out, seeking Prim's warmth, but finding only the rough canvas cover of the mattress. She must have had bad dreams, and climbed in with our mother. Of course she did. This is the day of the reaping." So, you see "is", you hear: "The other side of the bed is cold when I wake up." Present simple. Now, not only does this make it a little easier for new English learners or intermediate English learners to read the book because the present tenses are usually the first ones you learn, it also makes the book a lot more engaging, interesting, and exciting, because everything feels a lot more present. There's no other way to put it. Third of all, The Hunger Games, as you probably know if you're watching this video, or maybe you don't know, is very popular. Now, you might be thinking: "Why is this a good thing if I'm choosing a book to learn English?" Well, number one: It's really easy to find. Whether you're looking for the audio book or if you're looking for a physical copy, if you're looking for the e-book - every website, every store will have stacks and stacks of copies of this book. This also means there are multiple translations. This might also mean that you have already read this book in your own language, and it might be a good idea, now, to read it in English, because you're already familiar with the content, the characters, and what the action is like in the book. Fourth, it does have an interesting story. Is it my favorite book of all time? No, it's not, but it is pretty interesting. There is a dystopian world, a tyrannical government that's ruling everyone, and there's a strong female hero.

Teacher Karlee :-)
