01:02:43
Presented by Simon Kelly, curator of modern and contemporary art, Saint Louis Art Museum The Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh was intensely fascinated with the art and culture of Japan. Over the course of his career, Van Gogh painted copies of Japanese ukiyo-e prints and collected a range of Japanese art. Join lecturer Simon Kelly for a talk that examines the impact of japonisme on the artistic development of Van Gogh, including his use of the formal devices of ukiyo-e and the parallels that Van Gogh drew between Japan and the Provence region of France. What is SHOCK ART? What does SHOCK ART mean? SHOCK ART meaning, definition & explanation

02:21
What is SHOCK ART? What does SHOCK ART mean? SHOCK ART meaning - SHOCK ART definition - SHOCK ART explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Shock art is contemporary art that incorporates disturbing imagery, sound or scents to create a shocking experience. It is a way to disturb "smug, complacent and hypocritical" people. While the art form's proponents argue that it is "imbedded with social commentary" and critics dismiss it as "cultural pollution", it is an increasingly marketable art, described by one art critic in 2001 as "the safest kind of art that an artist can go into the business of making today". But while shock art may attract curators and make headlines, Reason magazine's 2007 review of The Art Newspaper suggested that traditional art shows continue to have more popular appeal. While the movement has become increasingly mainstream, the roots of shock art run deep into art history; Royal Academy curator Norman Rosenthal noted in the catalog for the "shock art" exhibit Sensation in 1997 that artists have always been in the business of conquering "territory that hitherto has been taboo". In China, which experienced an active "shock art" movement following the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, encroachment on the taboo has led the Ministry of Culture to attempt a crackdown on the artform, banning the use of corpses or body parts in art. In 1998, John Windsor in The Independent said that the work of the Young British Artists seemed tame compared with that of the "shock art" of the 1970s, including "kinky outrages" at the Nicholas Treadwell Gallery, amongst which were a "hanging, anatomically detailed leather straitjacket, complete with genitals", titled Pink Crucifixion, by Mandy Havers. In the United States in 2008, a court case went to trial to determine whether the fetish films of Ira Isaacs constitute shock art, as the director claims, or unlawful obscenity.

The Bacton Altar Cloth

03:34
A richly embroidered altar cloth, preserved for centuries in a small rural church in Bacton, Herefordshire, has recently been identified by experts as a piece of a sixteenth century dress, which may even have belonged to Queen Elizabeth I herself. Rumoured for centuries to be connected to the Tudor Queen via her servant, Blanche Parry, the story of this remarkable object is uncovered in a new book, from Historic Royal Palaces Joint Chief Curator Tracy Borman: ‘The Private Lives of the Tudors.’ Dating from the last decades of the sixteenth century, the altar cloth is a treasured possession of St Faith’s Church, Bacton, where until recently, it hung in a glass case on a wall, after having been retired as an altar cloth over a hundred years ago. Bacton was the birthplace of one of Elizabeth I’s most faithful servants, Blanche Parry, who began her 57 year service supervising the royal cradle rockers, and died as her Chief Gentlewoman of the Bedchamber. The altar cloth has long been associated with Parry, who erected a monument marking her loyal service to her mistress at St Faith’s. Although famous for her lavish wardrobe, it was not unusual for Elizabeth I to pass on her discarded clothes to her confidantes after they outlived their usefulness. The value of the fabrics used to create her elaborate costumes meant that they were often repurposed, and so very few garments directly linked to the Tudor Queen survive. Intriguingly, records show that she regularly gave many gifts of clothing to Parry, and the people of Bacton have speculated for centuries that their altar cloth might have been a gift to Parry from Elizabeth herself. A recent detailed examination of the altar cloth by Historic Royal Palaces curators has strengthened a theory that it once formed part of a court dress. It is made from cloth of silver – a high status fabric which Tudor sumptuary law dictated could only be worn by royalty, or the highest echelons of the aristocracy. Alongside the skilfully embroidered flowers embellishing the piece, the hand of a domestic embroiderer has been detected, adding caterpillars, butterflies, frogs and even a small rowing boat to the original design – this is typical of the type of embroidery undertaken by aristocratic Tudor ladies. Finally, dress historians have suggested that shaped seams at the back of the altar cloth point towards its history as a skirt panel. Now that the altar cloth has been formally identified as part of a dress, the question that has tantalised Bacton residents for generations remains: was this exquisite textile once worn by Queen Elizabeth I? As yet, no documentary evidence has been unearthed to suggest this – and yet the Queen is depicted in the famous ‘Rainbow portrait’ wearing a strikingly similar fabric. Blanche Parry’s monument to the Tudor Queen in St Faith’s Church depicts her kneeling beside her resplendent mistress, and is seen as one of the earliest examples of veneration of Elizabeth I. Might it be possible that her servant left another legacy of the famous ‘Virgin Queen’ for the residents of Bacton to worship?
Open Score 2016: Panel 4: The Future of Internet Art, presented by New Museum and Rhizome

59:13
This video documentation is part four of a four part series from a symposium that took place on January 30, 2016 at the New Museum. The New Museum and Rhizome jointly inaugurate an annual symposium titled "Open Score" that will explore the state of art and technology today. Convening luminary artists, curators, researchers, and writers to discuss how technology is transforming culture, the first edition of "Open Score" will consider how artists are responding to new conditions of surveillance and hypervisibility; how social media’s mass creativity interfaces with branding and identity for individual artists; how the quality and texture of art criticism is evolving in a digital age; and what the future of internet art might be in light of a broader assimilation of digital technologies. Supported by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, "Open Score: Art and Technology 2016" will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the groundbreaking initiative Experiments in Art and Technology. The conference’s title is taken from Rauschenberg’s live performance Open Score during one of E.A.T.’s most iconic events, “9 Evenings: Theatre and Engineering.” Panel 4: The Future of Internet Art Over the course of two decades, the nascent field of internet-based practice has exploded into the mainstream and become ubiquitous. The internet is no longer a new medium but a mass medium that permeates every aspect of culture and society internationally. In light of this, what is the future for the field of art engaged with the internet? Will it continue to offer artists the opportunity to connect with publics directly, without relying on art institutions? How will the history of internet art continue to inform its future, given the problems of creating digital social memory? How will the web’s increased competition from locked-down applications change digital cultural production and distribution? What has internet art’s embrace by the mainstream of contemporary art and popular culture done to its form and visibility? Will there be such a thing as internet art ten years from now, or will all art created before the internet, as the artist Oliver Laric has suggested, simply be “pre-internet art”? Speakers Constant Dullaart, artist and winner of the Rhizome Prix Net Art; Shawné Michaelain Holloway, artist; Peter Russo, Director, Triple Canopy; and Colin Self, artist Moderator Michael Connor, Artistic Director, Rhizome

We asked strangers to spontaneously get nude and be drawn by a carefully selected group of artists in a safe space. Instead of asking art critics and experts, we had six kids choose the best works among the 200+ artworks produced in the marathon. This video was taken at Bullish. Here Are Joel Embiid's Best Trolling Moments This NBA Season

Joel Embiid doesn’t like Lonzo Ball or his dad LaVar. At least, that’s what you probably thought after seeing some of the things Embiid put up on social media a few months back. In June, Embiid and his teammate Ben Simmons shared a brief back-and-forth about the Balls on Twitter after LaVar suggested the Lakers would make the playoffs during his son’s rookie season. Was the ark round? The new Babylonian text that reshaped Noah’s Ark

05:09
It all started with a fairly normal event for a museum: a member of the public bringing in an old family heirloom. However the heirloom – a cuneiform tablet from around 1750 BC – proved to be one in a million. Dr Irving Finkel, Deputy Keeper of Middle East at the British Museum, proceeded to decipher this tablet. In doing so, he discovered the earliest account of the ancient Babylonian ‘Story of the Flood’ – an account closely related to the biblical account of Noah. The sixty-line passage not only provided the materials and measurements required to build the ark, it also suggested that the vessel was round. This film is a small part of the journey Irving Finkel took from deciphering the text to building a replica ark with a team of archaeological boat builders. Does Michael Jordan Really Hate Rap?

02:16
Does Michael Jordan really hate rap as N.O.R.E. suggested during a Rap Radar podcast in March? MJ—or at least, a publicist speaking on behalf of MJ—said no shortly after N.O.R.E. made his claim. N.O.R.E. responded by reiterating his original point about MJ hating rap, though, and by pointing out that MJ did, in fact, attend a Def Jam Christmas party once despite his publicist saying that he hadn't been there—the same party where, N.O.R.E. says, MJ said, “F*ck rap," after Redman and Method Man asked for a few seconds of his time. MUSA for Teenagers

03:45
This film was written, produced, filmed and directed by MUSA's Youth Curators to tell us what aspects of MUSA they think will appeal to teenagers and what we might need to change. They've made some really fantastic suggestions and have told us that it would be brilliant to reduce the amount of writing, make things more colourful and try to make some things more eye-catching. They've also said that they love the interactivity at MUSA and think that the things that are bright and well laid out are great. As the Youth Curators know, many of the things they've suggested can't be done easily or quickly at MUSA. BUT their time hasn't been wasted; their ideas will influence our temporary exhibitions and, when the time is right, will be kept very much in mind when changes to MUSA are made. Their thoughts are also being used to help develop a number of other projects that we're currently working on (some of them a bit hush, hush, more about them another time), so their ideas are a massive help. The curators of Building Geometry, Andrew Witt and Noam Andrews, invite the GSD community to a lunchtime gallery talk and discussion on the exhibition. The event will further question received narratives of contemporary digital design process suggested by the exhibit, and provide material for a polemic reconsideration of technique and objectivity in design culture. Each curator will present a framework for engaging the exhibition, and respond to questions from each other and the audience on the past and future role of mathematical models for design. Dan Borelli, Director of Exhibitions at the GSD, will join and moderate the discussion.

Donald Glover Drops Hilarious 'Deadpool' Script After FX Pulls Plug on Series

02:10
On Saturday, FX announced it would no longer be teaming up with Donald Glover to release an animated ‘Deadpool’ TV series. The network cited “creative differences” as the reason for it, but some media outlets speculated that Glover’s busy schedule may have been to blame for the decision. Glover finally spoke on the split on Wednesday morning by taking to Twitter to reveal that he “wasn’t too busy” to work on ‘Deadpool.’ He shared a hilarious script of the show’s season finale as proof he was more than ready to take on the role. Woman Files Lawsuit After DNA Test Allegedly Says Her Biological Dad Was Fertility Doctor

01:27
Ancestry.com is out here changing people’s lives—but it’s not always for the better. According to the Washington Post, one woman who took the website’s DNA test discovered her biological father was not the man who had raised her; he was actually a now-retired fertility doctor who allegedly used his own sperm to impregnate her mother 36 years ago. After Kelli Rowlette received the shocking news, she and her family filed a lawsuit against Dr. Gerald E. Mortimer for medical negligence, fraud, battery, negligent infliction of emotional distress, and breach of contract. According to the suit, Rowlette was not aware that her now-divorced parents had undergone artificial insemination after unsuccessful attempts at natural conception. Mortimer reportedly told the couple that the issue was caused by the husband’s low sperm count and the wife’s tipped uterus; so, he suggested that the wife be inseminated with a mix of the husband’s sperm and that of an anonymous donor to increase the changes of conception. Donald Glover Reveals He's Been Making New Music, Gives Update on 'Atlanta'

It sounds like it’ll be a while before Donald Glover retires his Childish Gambino alias. During a Tuesday interview on BBC Radio 1, DJ Clara Amfo admitted she didn’t know how to address her guest. Did he prefer go by legal name or the stage name he plans to abandon? “Because it’s Donald Glover, though. But then there’s Childish Gambino, but I knew there’s an issue about retiring the name,” Amfo said. Glover reminded the DJ he hasn’t retired Gambino yet, and suggested he wouldn’t do so in the near future. “You still have a lot more time of calling me [Childish Gambino] if you want,” he said. Building the Moroccan Court

17:44
In 2011, The Metropolitan Museum of Art opened the New Galleries for the Art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia, and Later South Asia, which house the Museum's renowned collection of Islamic art. A vital part of the installation was the Patti Cadby Birch Court, a Moroccan court built by a team of experts—from curators and historians to designers and craftsmen—over many months. Complementing the works on view, which span the past fourteen hundred years, the Moroccan Court provides an experience of space and architecture while demonstrating artistic traditions that still thrive in the Islamic world. This video documents a marvelous journey from Fez to New York, and the creation of a twenty-first-century court using traditional fifteenth-century methods. The court was made possible by the Patti and Everett B. Birch Foundation. Explore more at MetMedia: http://www.metmuseum.org/metmedia/video

Tom Brady Won't Say Who He Voted For in the 2016 Election

02:22
Early last week, Donald Trump suggested that Tom Brady had voted for him in the 2016 presidential election during a rally in New Hampshire. "Tom Brady, great guy, great friend of mine, great, great champion, unbelieveable winner," Trump said. "He called me today and he said, 'Donald, I support you, you're my friend, and I voted for you.'" Trump also read a letter that Brady's head coach Bill Belichick had written to him. Brady made his weekly appearance on the Kirk & Callahan radio show a short time after the rally, and while he didn't necessarily deny what Trump had said, he declined to comment on whether or not he had voted for him. He went as far to say that he hadn't voted yet, and he let the show's hosts know that he would have more to say about his political preferences during his next appearance. Hawks Radio Announcer Burns Draymond Green for Dancing After Block

01:46
The Warriors beat the Hawks 105-100 on Monday night, and they did so due in large part to the defensive prowess of Draymond Green. Green—who has spoken publicly about wanting to win the Defensive Player of the Year award this season in recent weeks—recorded two big blocks in the final 43 seconds of the game to help Golden State eek out a win over Atlanta. And during his post-game press conference, he spoke about how he is personally offended by those who have suggested that the Warriors got worse on the defensive side of the ball when they signed Kevin Durant and let some of their bigger bodies go in free agency. Dr. Elizabeth Greene: "The Roman Army on the British Frontier in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD"

55:55
Recent excavations at the fort of Vindolanda on Hadrian's Wall The Roman fort at Vindolanda is located one mile south of Hadrian’s Wall in northern England. Vindolanda was declared a Unesco world heritage site because of the unique organic material recovered there and its great importance in the history of this region and the Roman world in general. In particular the site is known as the home of the Vindolanda writing tablets, approximately two-thousand ink-on-wood documents that have preserved information including personal correspondence, military strength reports and inventory lists pertaining to the site’s soldiers and civilians. These tablets have been preserved as a result of anaerobic conditions caused by the construction of at least nine consecutive periods of Roman occupation on the site. In addition to written documents Vindolanda has produced the world’s largest assemblage of Roman leather goods and countless unique artifacts including textiles and a Roman helmet crest. Since 1970 excavations at Vindolanda have been conducted under the auspices of the Vindolanda Trust, a registered charitable organization that employs a staff of archaeologists, conservationists and curators, and administers two museums as well as the archaeological site itself. These excavations are undertaken with consent from English Heritage, the official government regulatory body concerned with archaeological sites and monuments, and with the help of a thriving community of volunteer excavators who offer their time under the supervision of a core of professional archaeologists. These excavators comprise a diverse group of people from around the world including professionals, retired persons and students from a variety of universities. For the past nine field seasons Elizabeth Greene and Alexander Meyer have acted as supervisors for the excavations and volunteer program, as well as serving as area directors for specific excavation projects. As a part of the excavation staff they have the unique opportunity to develop a field school for university students that will run in parallel to the established excavations at Vindolanda. The field school will allow undergraduate students to use this remarkable site as the base for their education in field archaeology, for the study of Rome’s northern frontier and to interact with other students from around the world.

Baltimore Police Document Leaked Suggesting Freddie Gray Broke His Own Spine

01:26
The Washington Post has obtained a police document that states another prisoner in the van that transported Freddie Gray after his arrest heard Gray "banging against the walls" of the car and suggested that Gray "was intentionally trying to injure himself." According to the Post, the document was written by a Baltimore police officer, and offers an account of what could have happened inside the van, although there is no evidence at this time to confirm the prisoner's account. The Post obtained the document under the condition that the prisoner involved would remain anonymous. Gray died in police custody after sustaining a serious and mysterious spinal injury. Baltimore police have admitted that Gray should have received medical attention sooner than he did. An investigation by the Department of Justice into Gray's death is pending. Almost immediately after the Post published their report, some called it into question, pointing out the suspicious timing of the leak and its reliance on an anonymous source. President Obama Picks MJ over LeBron and Kobe, Says Ben Simmons Will Be Great

01:19
President Obama held an #askPOTUS Twitter Q&A on Thursday and, as he has been known to do in the past, he talked about sports for a portion of it. Twitter user @kool_ant asked him to choose between Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and LeBron James. And to absolutely no one’s surprise, he went with MJ (despite this). But in doing so, he also name-dropped Ben Simmons and suggested that, in time, the LSU star might end up in the same category as MJ, Kobe, and LeBron. Wow. The kid is good, but MJ/Kobe/LeBron good? Yikes. The hype is real!
