Present Simple exercise - English grammar exercise
Present simple exercise. Put your knowledge into practise and find out if you know everything on the present simple or need to watch the lesson again! Video exercise with feedback. Welcome to English grammar spot! It is now time to put your knowledge with present simple exercise one. In this exercise I'm going to give you 15 sentences that look like the following sentence: I ... to play football. So I'm going to give you the infinitive form of the verb and your job is to conjugate that verb into fitting it in the sentence. I am going to give you a time frame, Time's up! I play football. Ready? Let's get started. They ...(to walk) eight miles a day. They walk eight miles a day. Remember when it is a plural we simply use the base form of the verb. It usually ... (to snow) in winter here. It usually snows in winter here. Here it concerns a third person singular ít'so we need to add an -s to the base form of the verb. Water ... (to boil) at a 100 degrees Celsius. Water boils at a 100 degrees Celsius. Again we have a third person singular namely water because we can replace it by the pronoun 'it.' So we need to add an -s, also remember when it is a present simple and it concerns a fact we need to use the present simple. All trains ... (to depart) from platform B. All trains depart from platform B. Here all trains can be replaced by the pronoun 'they' and since it is a plural we simply use the base form of the verb. Those dogs ... (to be) old. Those dogs are old. Remember the verb 'to be' has its own forms so it is hard to conjugate it: I am you are, he is, she is, it is, we are, you are, they are and those dogs can be replaced by they, so we use are. That cat ... (to try) to catch the mouse. That cat tries to catch the mouse. Now remember when it concerns a one syllable verb that ends in a 'y', and is preceded by a consonant and more importantly when it concerns a third person singular and here that cat can be replaced by 'it we change the 'y' into 'ie' and obviously we add an -s. The car ... (to be) fast. The car is fast. Remember 'to be' has its own forms. Now let's continue with questions. You ... (to speak) English? Do you speak English? Remember when forming questions in the present simple we need a helping verb and with the present simple e use the verb 'to do.' ... your brother ... (to speak) Arabic. Does your brother speak Arabic? Now remember your brother is a third person singular so we need to use does, but don't put an -s after speak because the -s has moved on to the verb 'to do' So it is not does your brother speaks. I ... (not to like) pancakes. Also with negations in the present simple we need the verb 'to do' so here the answer is: I don't like pancakes. It ... (not to rain) in July here. It doesn't rain in July here. Remember it's a third person singular and we need a helping verb to do so it becomes does and don't put an -s after rain. ... (you - not to know) me? Don't you know me? Angela often ... (to try) to help me. Angela often tries to help me. Remember third person singular ending in y. The child ... (to catch) the ball for me. The child catches the ball for me. Remember when the verb ends in an -s sound, here catch, and it concerns a third person singular we have to put -es after the base form of the verb. Final question. ... (to do - your sister) your homework? Does your sister do your homework? This must look a little strange because we use the verb 'to do' twice here, but first we use does obviously as a helping verb and the second 'do' is a lexical verb, it adds meaning to the sentence, here the meaning of making. I thank you for your attention and I hope you did well but if you need to know extra information simply go to youtube.com/englishgrammarspot or go to www.englishgrammarspot.com to watch the video on the present simple again or to watch my other videos.

Past Continuous Tense vs. Past Simple: The Mysterious Stalker (Suspense Thriller Short - ESL Video)
Watch the suspense thriller short about Elissa and the mysterious stalker & present the past continuous tense vs. past simple to students in a pre-intermediate level lesson. For the “No Music” version of this video, please click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hS6FNg0VoJw Title of English / ESL Video: Elissa and the Mysterious Stalker Target English Grammar: Past Continuous Tense vs. Past Simple Tense. (Also known as Past Progressive Tense and Simple Past Tense) Student Proficiency Level: Pre-intermediate level grammar Suggested Courses: General English. Instructions: – Play the video in class after delivering a warm-up activity first. – Pause the video whenever the narrator asks students a question to give students time to answer. For example, after elicitations and concept checking questions (CCQs). Summary of English Grammar: Past Continuous Tense vs. Past Simple Approximate chronological order: Storyline: – Starts at 0:00. Ends at 2:40. English Grammar Rules and Explanations: Function: – To talk about an action still in progress in the past. Timeline: – Someone was chasing her. – Someone started chasing her in the past, but we don’t know when. – That person stopped chasing her some time in the past. Again, we don’t know when. – We are talking about the whole period from the beginning of the chase to the end. Specific Uses: – Background event: – On a cold dark night, Elissa was working late at the office. – This sentence sets the setting and the background of the story. Simple Past: – To talk about completed or repeated actions. – She quickly ran into the cemetery. – This action is finished and completed. – When we use two simple past actions, the second action happened after the first action. For example, – She quickly ran into the cemetery and hid there. – So she ran into the cemetery first, then she hid inside the cemetery. Combining the Past Progressive Tense with the Simple Past: – Past progressive = longer action – Past simple = shorter action – The shorter action happened while the longer action was still in progress. But sometimes these two actions happen at the same time. – Example: As she was leaving her office, she realised the streets were now empty. – Elissa leaving her office is the longer action. – Elissa realising the streets were empty is the shorter action. – So Elissa was leaving her office and during this time, she noticed the streets were now empty. But she didn’t stop leaving the office when she noticed this. Specific Uses: – Interruption: Sometimes a shorter action interrupted a longer action. – Example: While she was walking back home, she heard some footsteps behind her. She turned around to look. – Elissa walking back home is the longer action. – Hearing the footsteps is the shorter action. – In this case, the footsteps interrupted her walking and made her stop to look back before she continued walking again. Multiple Progressive Actions in the Same Sentence: – Multiple actions happening at the same time. – Example: I was walking home and someone was following me. – We don’t know which action started first. – We also don’t know which action finished first. – We only know that during a certain period in the past these two actions were happening at the same time. – We can use more than two past progressive actions in the same sentence, and all these actions were happening at the same time some time in the past. Form: Statements: Subject + was/were + verb (-ing) + … Elissa + was + working + late. Yes/No Questions: Was/were + subject + verb (-ing) + …? Was + Elissa + working + late? Open Questions: Wh-/How + was/were + subject + verb (-ing) + …? Why + was + Elissa + working + late? Conjunctions: – We use conjunctions to join past simple and progressive actions. – Example conjunctions: while, when, as. – Example sentence 1: While she was walking back home, she heard some footsteps behind her. – Example sentence 2: When Elissa was hiding, the footsteps stopped. – Example sentence 3: As she was running, she saw a cemetery. Switching the Order of the Tenses: – We can also place the simple past action at the front of the sentence before the past continuous action. – Example: She heard some footsteps behind her while she was walking back home. Concept Checking Questions (CCQs)

One of our most innovative, popular thinkers takes on-in exhilarating style-one of our key questions: Where do good ideas come from? With Where Good Ideas Come From, Steven Johnson pairs the insight of his bestselling Everything Bad Is Good for You and the dazzling erudition of The Ghost Map and The Invention of Air to address an urgent and universal question: What sparks the flash of brilliance? How does groundbreaking innovation happen? Answering in his infectious, culturally omnivorous style, using his fluency in fields from neurobiology to popular culture, Johnson provides the complete, exciting, and encouraging story of how we generate the ideas that push our careers, our lives, our society, and our culture forward. Beginning with Charles Darwin's first encounter with the teeming ecosystem of the coral reef and drawing connections to the intellectual hyperproductivity of modern megacities and to the instant success of YouTube, Johnson shows us that the question we need to ask is, What kind of environment fosters the development of good ideas? His answers are never less than revelatory, convincing, and inspiring as Johnson identifies the seven key principles to the genesis of such ideas, and traces them across time and disciplines. Most exhilarating is Johnson's conclusion that with today's tools and environment, radical innovation is extraordinarily accessible to those who know how to cultivate it. Where Good Ideas Come From is essential reading for anyone who wants to know how to come up with tomorrow's great ideas. How to form Question Tags? - English Grammar Lesson
Question tags -- English Grammar Lesson Question tags are the short questions that we put on the end of sentences -- particularly in spoken English. There are lots of different question tags but the rules are not difficult to learn. In this video lesson Ceema explains, how to form a question tag - Intonation Question tags can either be 'real' questions where you want to know the answer or simply asking for agreement when we already know the answer. If the question tag is a real question we use rising intonation. Our tone of voice rises. If we already know the answer we use falling intonation. Our tone of voice falls. Positive/negative If the main part of the sentence is positive, the question tag is negative .... He's funny, isn't he? You work in a bank, don't you? ...And if the main part of the sentence is negative, the question tag is positive. She didn't finish her homework , did she? She isn't coming, is she? Without auxiliary verbs If the main part of the sentence doesn't have an auxiliary verb, the question tag uses an appropriate form of 'do'. They speak fluent English, don't they? We ran for hours in the park, didn't we?

Voici quelques exemples : What are you doing ? what = pronom interrogatif are = auxiliaire you = sujet doing = verbe Where did you find this ? where = pronom interrogatif did = auxiliaire you = sujet find = verbe etc. Maintenant, nous allons voir un par un les pronoms interrogatifs les plus fréquents ainsi que leur utilisation, pour que vous sachiez désormais poser toutes les questions que vous voulez en anglais: Where : On le traduirait par « où » en français. Where sert à se renseigner sur un lieu, un endroit. Exemples : Where is the pub? (où est le pub?). It’s in the city center. (Il est en centre ville). Where did you go last summer? (Où es-tu allé l’été dernier?). Where…from : En français on le traduirait par « d’où? » ou « de…où? ». Exemples: Where do you come from ? (D’où viens-tu?) Where do you start from? (D’où est-ce que tu commences?) Why : En français, on dirait « pourquoi ». « Why » sert donc à se renseigner sur la cause, la raison. Exemples : Why didn’t you come yesterday ? (Pourquoi n’es-tu pas venu hier?) Why are you spending so much money on video games? (Pourquoi dépenses-tu tant d’argent avec les jeux vidéos?) Who : « Qui » en français. Ce mot interrogatif nous permet de nous renseigner sur une personne. Exemples : Who is the person in charge ? (Qui est le responsable?) Who are you talking to ? (A qui parles tu?) Whose : « A qui ». Ce mot interrogatif sert à trouver la personne qui possède (un objet le plus souvent.) Exemples: Whose computer is it ? (A qui est cet ordinateur?) Whose phone is it ? (A qui est ce téléphone?) When : Il signifie « quand ». On se renseigne donc sur une date, une heure, une année ou n’importe quel moment. Exemples : When did you quit your job? (Quand as-tu quitté ton job?) When did they arrive? (Quand-est-ce qu’ils sont arrivés?) What : Il veut dire « quoi » ou « que » en français. On s’en sert pour poser une question sur un objet, une actualité, une occupation, une profession etc. Par exemple : What do you study ? (Qu’est-ce que tu étudies?) What do you do ? (Qu’est-ce que tu fais?) What did you see ? (Qu’est-ce que tu as vu?) What …For : « what…for » signifie « dans quel but ». Ainsi il veut dire « pourquoi » mais pas exactement dans le même sens que « why ». Why demande des informations sur la cause, tandis que what..for renseigne sur le but. Exemples : What are you waiting for? (Qu’est-ce que tu attends?) What do you need this tool for? (Dans quel but as-tu besoin de cet outil?) What + nom : Lorsqu’il est suivi d’un nom dans une question, dans la plupart des cas, what peut se traduire par « quel/quelle ». Exemple: What kind of coffee do you like ? (Quel genre de café aimes-tu?) Which : « Quel » en français. Il a donc la même signification que what + nom. Cependant, on utilise plus which lorsqu’on on est amené à choisir parmi plusieurs options données. On dit que which est limitatif, dans le sens où il implique un choix (du type l’un ou l’autre). Exemples : which actor do you prefer? (Quel acteur est-ce que tu préfères?) Which game do you want to play ? (A quel jeu veux-tu jouer?) How : How veut dire « comment » dans la plupart des cas. Exemples : How did you learn this ? (Comment as-tu appris cela?) How did they arrive? (Comment sont-ils arrivés?) How much – How many : How much et how many veulent dire « combien ». On utilise how much + singulier et how many + pluriel. Exemples : how much does it cost ? (Combien ça coûte?) How many children do you have ? (Combien d’enfants avez-vous?) How + adjectif : How peut être suivi d’un adjectif pour poser une multitude de questions. Cela sera plus clair avec des exemples : How long was this movie ? (Quelle était la durée de ce film?) How old are you ? (Quel âge as-tu?) How often do you go to the swimming pool? (A quelle fréquence vas-tu à la piscine? en français on dirait plutôt « tu vas souvent à la piscine?« ) How far is the next city? (A quelle distance est la prochaine ville?) Etc. Comme vous le voyez on peut utiliser how suivi de nombreux adjectifs pour poser une question relative à la qualité de l’adjectif. débutant intermédiaire gratuit vidéo conversation 6ème audio américain poser des questions en anglais exercices comment poser une question en anglais pdf question en anglais avec how question en anglais pour connaitre quelqu'un poser une question en anglais au passé poser une question en anglais traduction

This is a very, very time-consuming and difficult task that you will have to do when you are learning English. They're verbs. We have many verbs in English. We have what are called regular verbs. A regular verb will end in "ed". For example: "use", "used". So, regular verb. We like to call them "ed" verbs just to be fancy. So, regular verbs are easy because they all both end in "ed" if you have different forms. Now, what I'm going to go over today is the difference in forms between simple past and the past participle. So, we have the simple present tense, which is something like: "I eat pizza." When we use simple present, it's something we do every day. Then we have what's called the simple past, or you can say past simple. It doesn't matter; it's the same. So, we have the present tense, we have the past, and we have what's called the past participle. Have you heard of this before? The past participle, it's so difficult for me to say, so I'm going to call it p.p. from now on. So, the past participle, you're going to have to use if you learn present perfect. Now, if you don't know what these are yet, that's okay. If you've heard of these before and you know what they are, that's fantastic. Past perfect and all the forms of passive voice that we have in English. If these are new kind of ideas to you, please don't worry, but it's not past, present "prefect" it's present perfect. We must be perfect. If these are new things for you... I'll get this spelling right, I promise. There we go, present perfect. If these are new concepts to you, don't worry about it. Okay? Just focus on learning these groups, and we have a very, very beautiful list of verbs to help you in the resources section on www.engvid.com. Go there now. You can put it... It's in PDF file, so you can print it out and you can have the list in front of you to memorize, to remember, to help you. What I want you do is I want to introduce you to-doo, doo, doo, doo-group one and two of irregular verbs. Once you do this, there's also a video on group number three, which is the most difficult. So we're starting with the easiest ones, yay. And again, this is groups one and two. You can find them, a list of these on the resources section. So, past participle, I will now call p.p. Yay. We have the present tense, simple past or past, and then the past participle. The first group is the most delicious. It's the best because we don't have to change anything. Woo-hoo. So, if in the present tense the verb is "cut", the past tense is "cut", and so is the past participle or the p.p. So, we have: "cut", "cut", "cut". For example, if we use present tense: "I cut the pizza." If we use past tense, I can say: "Yesterday, I cut the grass." And if I wanted to use the past participle, let's say I want to use present perfect, I can say: "The grass has been cut." So, we don't need to change the verb. These are some examples of verbs that we don't have to change. So, these are the easiest, and probably your favourite. We have: "cost", "hit", "hurt", ow. So if you... Something hits you, you are hurt. "Let", "put", "quit". If the simple past is "shut", what do you think the past participle would be? It's the same, so this would also be "shut". So, I could say: "I shut the door.", "The door was shut.", or: "The door has been shut." And in the last one we have the word "bet". Again, we don't have to change it, so it's: "bet", "bet", "bet". I bet you like this lesson. Yeah? Okay? So these ones are the easiest and the most fun because they don't have to change. Whew. We're going to go into group two. Group two is okay, because we only have to change one time now. So, if we have the present tense, section A, all we're doing to make it past or use the past participle, is we're changing it, and all of these ones are going to have a "d" ending. So, present tense we have "sell", "sold", and "sold". I hear a lot of people doing this: "Sell, sold, sold", so they're saying: "sell", "sold", "sold". If you repeat it in your head, it will help you remember it. We have "tell", "told", "told"; "feed"...

Grammar: Learn to use REPORTED SPEECH in English
http://www.engvid.com/ Reported speech and indirect speech mean the same thing: They allow you to express what someone has said. This sentence, "He said he was studying English", is an example of reported speech. But how do you conjugate the verbs? Is it "he said he was studying" or "he said he studied"? Both are correct depending on the situation. Learn how to say it correctly every time with Ronnie's quick and easy chart. Your friends said they watched this lesson. So what are you waiting for? http://www.engvid.com/reported-speech-he-said-she-said/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. My name's Ronnie. I'm going to teach you some very, very simple reported speech things. If you don't know what reported speech is, welcome to the confusing word... World of confusing reported speech and words. Reported speech, maybe when you study it in your class, the teacher or whoever, will call it indirect speech. It's the same. So, indirect speech or reported speech is exactly the same. Yay. Why or how do we use reported speech? Good question. We use this to report or to write down what somebody has said. If somebody has told you something, this is going to be a quote. A "quote" means you copy the person's words exactly. You have to be really careful not to change their words. Reported speech or indirect speech is usually only used for writing. So, we don't really have to worry about all of these crazy rules when we speak. Whew, thank god. So, we're just going to go through the past, the present, and the future. We're going to change quoted speech into reported speech. This little chart will help you. If you want to copy down this chart, take a picture of the chart, I guarantee it will make your reported speech grammar class or grammar learning amazing. Check it out. So, in the present tense, we have two tenses, we have present simple or simple present and we have present continuous. As an example: "She eats lunch." is present simple. This is something she does every day. So if I wanted to report or write down this, write this down, I would use reported speech. So: "She eats lunch." My present simple, what I'm going to do is I'm going to take my verb "eats", and change it to past simple. So, present simple verb we're going to change to past simple. I would say: "She said she ate lunch." In this sentence, "eat" is present simple; in the reported speech, "ate" is my past simple. So, present simple changes to past simple in reported speech. If I have a present continuous example, this means something the person is doing now... For example: "He is painting." So he's an artist, he's got a paint brush and some paint, and he's painting. We have to change this to past continuous. So, if we have "is painting", all we have to do to make this past continuous is change it to "was painting". Present continuous to past continuous, the only thing that changes is our "to be" verb changes from present to past. "He said he was painting." Moving right along. Or moving back, back to the future. We have present perfect. An example of a present perfect sentence: "He", sorry. "They had a shower." It's about time; they smell a lot. So, if we wanted to report this or write this down, we would say... Oh, he said... He... Sorry: "They have had". This is strange, "have had". Check this out. Present perfect is going to change to past perfect. So: "They have had", if we change it to past perfect, we have to change it to "had had". Ronnie, "had had"? Is that true? Yes. This is right. So, present perfect, "have had", changes to "had" plus PP: "had had". So: "They said they had had a shower." And it's about time, because they're pretty smelly. The next one: past simple. For example: "He took my photo." In this sentence, your verb is "took". This is a past. So, past simple, present perfect, both of these we have to change to, again, past perfect. So we're going to change this to: "They said he had taken my photo." And the last one, past perfect, don't change it. It's cool. It's already done. Past perfect you have to change to past perfect, so you don't have to change the grammar in this sentence. -"They had had a dog." -"They said they had had"-that's crazy again, but it's true-"a dog." So, if you have a past sentence, present perfect, simple past, or past perfect, all of these are going to be changed to past perfect. That's easier. "Had" plus the past participle. You okay? Moving on to the future. We have two future tenses in English. Future simple or simple future, which is going to be "will", and we have future "going to". Simple future: "She will go." Future "going to": "They are going to play football with their new shoes." Do you play football? Future simple: "She will go", all we're going to do is change the verb or the modal "will" to "would". So it's going to change to: "She would go". That's cool. "Will" changes to "would". That's easy.
