366 ratings | 31511 views
Watch Colin Wiggins give an in-depth talk on John Constable's 'The Hay Wain', one of the best known paintings in the history of British art. Find out how radical Constable's approach was at the time of creating this extraordinary work, and how he would go on to influence the course of modern art, from Delacroix's painting technique, to the landscapes of the Impressionists, like Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro. What a fantastic painting . At first you'd think of a Dutch landscape done by Ruijsdael, then you you find out it's done with a lighter touch and it has not a Dutch atmosphere at all. But then it is painted in the following 18th Century in England ....

I don't understand the Turner hate... don't think I've ever heard someone deride Turner's work so callously.

HAY WAIN A REFERENCE TO THE GREAT BEAR/PLOUGH CONSTELLATION...I HAVE NO IDEA IF ANY OTHER OF HIS PAINTINGS REFER YO CELESTIAL BODIES...PRIMARILY SPEAKING I HAVEN'T DEIGNED TO LOOK... NOR SEARCHED THE STARS FOR THE ANSWERS.

Not my favorite painter, but this painting is really gorgeous. And Constable’s skies are always astounding. Great lecture, great lecturer

Could not tell why this picture is so great. What are the artistic strengths of the picture. He discussed painting techniques and other such details which are not much related to artistic merits of picture.

I really enjoyed all of the information. You conveyyour feelings so well. I am instantly transported to the time period. When people saw both Costible and Turners work in the same time. People viewed them differently. Paintings are meant to be viewed standing back as you expressed so vibrantly and with real conviction. I am going to Post this Video on my Facebook. For my friends and family. It's good to know our history. You indeed are knowledgeable. God Bless You and yours. Thank you for the quality video.

Curator Colin Wiggins, if I could only put my feelings into words and thank you for this amazing lecture. 'The Hay Wain' has always been one of my all-time favourite paintings in the collection of the National Gallery and anywhere else as well. Quoting John Constable, I'd say, 'The Hay Wain' is but another way for feeling. Thank you so very much !
