Thanks so much.Such a lonely man who still apparently craved for a Solitude and followed his Creative Passion to our Delight and Awe.A man with no interest with the artificiallity of materialism. The kind of person I would like listening to ...

God Almighty... Charlie Rose called the artist "a guy" in the first 10 seconds, then waves his hand toward the painting in a gesture that could have scratched it ! Then he does it again with the next paiting ! I would have tossed him out of the building. At the third painting the expert stands him further away thank God... then Rose almost swipes the painting in the wildest gesture yet ! I can't watch this anymore.
This special episode would have been more enjoyable without Charlie Rose, jeez—how annoying of an ‘interviewr’ he is; skipping it because of it…might have been great otherwise. :(

These people consider themselves to be experts, but can't pronounce his name correctly.

I remember this segment. Geez, 20 years ago? Time flies.

His iconic trademark swirls makes him legendary in the art world, imo. Rip vvg.

Charlie Rose looks like he's stoned off his ass.

All of this interpretation sounds like bunk. Yes- van Gogh's technique grew over the years as he painted. I'm under the impression that van Gogh walked out upon the stage of life and painted what he wanted.
T S (2 months ago)
what a joke, the man just simply could not paint
Kel B (3 months ago)
I enjoy Van Gogh, but I never liked his bedroom painting. His colors were always dreamy, but that painting is a pure bore, imo. I'm actually a fan of his boat paintings and of course Starry Night.

Amazing. had to stop at 1:43 cuz of the sand in the painting.

Wow! A print copy of that Vincent Van Gogh 'Harvest' landscape painting I remember so well hung on the wall of my dormitory at the reform school I was at as a boy in the UK. That painting must have made an impression to recognise it from all those years ago now that I am a reformed 73 year old.

Charlie Rose is such a pretentious and self absorbed twat.

Is that Vincent at 0.28? I doubt it; always read there's only 1 photopraph known of Vincent, the one at 0.33...
frode (5 months ago)
Hi Renzo; tank you; after I wrote this I remembered there are 2,3 photographs more:-) which are certain it's van Gogh... I only know of one photograph of van Gogh as an adult- a picture where he sits with his back towards the camera, I believe it was together with Emile Bernard...I doubt the picture at 0.28 is van Gogh, can't find it anywhere; I'll google a bit more to look for answers and if anyone knows more, I'd love to know too:-)...Yes, only one painting sold, I remember:-)
Renzo (5 months ago)
frode . The idea that there is only one photo of van Gogh is incorrect.Perhaps you are confusing it with the idea that he sold only one painting.

As a portrait painter, i cannot for the life of me, figure out why Van Gogh is considered a " genius". Art curators and critics seem to be always singing from the same hymn sheet as though, independent opinion or critical analysis is beyond them. Van Gogh painting a crow over a wheat field is literally just an M in felt tip. Sunflowers is appallingly crude. Emperors new clothes syndrome i suspect.
Kel B (3 months ago)
A portrait painter is no better than a Van Gogh. Art is up to interpretation.

This is a amazingly interested documentary on the dutch master Vincent Van Gogh !
Jeremy Johnson (6 months ago)
I believe Van Gogh to be like the Tarantino of the art world, in the fact that both take their influences, which are quite evident in their work, then put their own spin on them. The work then becomes utterly revolutionary and visionary and breath taking. They are completely original, completely evocative, and both became masters of their art form.
pajoian (2 months ago)
I don't recall Van Gogh once painting blood? Your comment holds no weight. They have nothing in common. This comment just shows your lack of reference points for filmmakers. Stick to watching Tarantino movies and drop the art critic bs.

I cannot abide so called 'experts' pontificating in their patronising way. Laying down the law of what is what...bah!
rye stb (1 month ago)
xyzllii without art criticism, art wouldn't mean as much. Just a picture on the wall...interpreted any which way. Why even bother
KrackowKid (8 months ago)
Am I the only one who think art critics see things that they want to see ? Is art not widely open to interpretism ?
rye stb (1 month ago)
If you can make a criticism as intelligent as his, by all means do.
Renzo (5 months ago)
KrackowKid ....yes. Art is open to interpretation. That’s one thing that makes looking at art so rewarding. The opinion of critics has value. But don’t be intimidated or bullied by it. Just keep in mind that your feelings about a particular work of art are also opinion and it might be wise not to make sweeping judgements.

I am still not convinced that Wheat Field with Crows is an optimistic picture. The red colour poured in front of the picture is so intense that it reminded me of Caravaggio's Beheading of St John. It is blood.
telecasterbear (9 months ago)
i am wondering if the gallery repaints the walls for each show, or is that the wall color that is always there.
Renzo (5 months ago)
telecasterbear ....Museums will often repaint walls for visiting exhibitions. But for their permanent collection, the walls generally remain as originally painted.

The tormented genius who marvels at us with his thick strokes.
Austin Ōzōlins (10 months ago)
Why does he keep saying corn??? It's all WHEAT!!!
Renzo (5 months ago)
Austin Ōzōlins ....In Europe and specifically in England, the word corn can refer to any grain: wheat in England. Oats in Scotland etc. what Americans call corn is often referred to in Europe as maize except when referring to pop corn. They don’t say pop Maize !!
Redrum (11 months ago)
he was technically horrible .However a strange magic is infused in each one redeeming them in one's heart.
Renzo (5 months ago)
I guess that to modern art technical perfection is less important than it was earlier. Look at Chagall, Matisse......

'Starry Night' is in the Met in NYC This was filmed in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam
gavin Reid (11 months ago)
it's ironic that so much time should be spent in front of" Van Gogh's Bedroom in Arles" to discuss his use of colour . This painting has faded significantly due to the impermanence of the paint Geranium Lake.
John Paul Brotherton (1 year ago)
Who cares what Americans thinks about his work ?? NO ONE !!!
Renzo (5 months ago)
Can you really make such a sweeping generalization?

At 8:46, "the hand which seems to be not holding the handle" sounds like the exhibtionist means that the kettle is floating. But upon closer inspection, the handle is hidden between the index and middle finger, as it re-emerges.
Max Nicholas (1 year ago)
Bingo! What fun! Great thanks to John Leighton for his careful, studied rendition. And. Almost 20 years on, Charlie Rose fulfills his self-chosen task as the clueless, scripted dullard.
Renzo (5 months ago)
Max Nicholas ...Yes. Rose can talk with more authority on politics, economy and sports than he can with any of the humanities. But,at least, he tries.
